The Renishaw MH20i probe in my Mitutoyo Crysta CMM is not lighting the red LED when turned on. The probe isn't working. The power did go out a few days ago and the computer shut down. Any thoughts? Probe? cable? PC card?
Did it used to work? Did the swing arm get hit hard? If so do what Jacob suggested. On my machine the motor (not a servo motor) has a shaft extension with a hex male profile that allows you to attach a socket and drive with a wrench.
On my Hardinge (Bridgeport) the tool would get thrown when the swing arm rotated. There's a cam on the swing arm that is supposed to hold the tool in during swinging. The rod pushing the cam was sticking and I cleaned it off and all was fine.
So I'm about to machine a taper on the lathe jaws to hold a casting. Obviously the taper can't match the casting exactly. I'm thinking you shoot to get contact at the widest point (the entrance to the taper)? Seems like that would have the most moment resistance.

You can blue up the teeth to check contact. Phosphor Bronze or Aluminum Bronze with a hardened steel worm works. Cast iron gear and soft steel for worm also work. Mobil 634 Synthetic works well for worm gears.
