    VN universal sub head disassembly

Well, I just wanted to say thank you all for your help! Every time I have a question, someone on this forum has either had the answer, or has led me down the path to the answer! Big thank you to Brandenburger for the tip about there being a jam nut next to the bevel gear. That is exactly...

    VN universal sub head disassembly

Jim, Thank you for the nugget of wisdom! I will look to see if there is another set screw under the first one. I didn't even think about that. On the "jam nut" above the bevel gear (in this picture), there is a hole for a set screw (which I removed already), and another blind hole that...

    VN universal sub head disassembly

So, this head is definitely 1940's Era. It has bronze bushings instead of roller bearings, so it is definitely an early van norman type. I think I found a good representation of how my head is designed, albeit a later type with taper roller bearings. In this diagram, it looks like there are...

    VN universal sub head disassembly

Brandenburger, that is what I thought they might be, but I don't see any threads above or below them. They did have set screws in them. One set screw in the ring gear, and another in that ring to the left, that could potentially be a "jam nut." How would you even get a spanner on that jam nut...

    VN universal sub head disassembly

If it does need to press out (and I'm just not using enough force), how do you hold the ring gear inside the head so the teeth don't hit the housing? That is what I've been battling in order to get a good press on it.

Here are the pictures of my milling head.

    VN universal sub head disassembly

Has anyone taken a VN sub head apart before? This specific one has bronze bushings in it. I have found a picture of a similar one disassembled, but I am stuck at pushing the spindle out of the housing. The first picture is a similar one I found on this forum. The other pictures are my sub...

    Vernon horizontal mill questions

Now, it's time to make the missing arbor and arbor support. I got 4 feet of 1-1/2" cold rolled and several think plates to make it happen!

    Vernon horizontal mill questions

The two upper belts turned out to be 4L440 V Belts. Incase someone stumbles upon this thread in the future. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. From showing me where to get the parts manuals to identifying the maker of my vertical milling head (from...

    Van Norman 1/2 Bearings

Looks like I may be the only one who has taken one of these heads apart. I'm going to try to press it out tonight. I sure hope I don't break something.

    Van Norman 1/2 Bearings

Jim, Yes, there is a visible key way that runs the length of the top adjusting nut to the bevel gear inside the head. I just cannot figure out how to get that steel sleeve out from the bronze bushing. I have tried everything to get it out: 1. Heating with a heat gun on high setting 2. Pipe...

    Van Norman 1/2 Bearings

Also, does anyone know how old these sub heads with bronze bushings are? I only found one reference to these in an accessories catalog on vintage machinery.org. The catalog did not have a date on it.

    Van Norman 1/2 Bearings

Seth, I was hoping you may be around to help answer a question. When you took your spindle apart, was there a threaded section in the middle of the housing where the bevel gear sits? I have a very similar VN sub head that I am trying to take apart and cannot get the tapered cones out of the...

    Vernon horizontal mill questions

Bump Nobody knows? I was hoping someone had their machine apart at some point and could see the belt size. I'm sure the "right combination" of belts would work, as there is adjustability in the system, but I don't really want to go back and forth with autozone for numerous v belts. Hahaha
