    Finest finish achievable flat surface

I ran it under my .0001 test indicator. I get less than .0001 variance across the whole surface, maybe .00004-.00005 total. I suppose I didn't stop to consider if this was necessary/desirable. In any case I may well give lapping on sandpaper a shot. Out of curiosity, have any of you guys...

    Finest finish achievable flat surface

Hey guys. Started the surface grinding portion of my apprenticeship about 6 months ago. I quite enjoy it and my work has been good. I haven't asked the guys in the shop yet, but I was wondering how fine can you truly get a finish on a surface grinder? (6x18 Okamoto auto feed w/ coolant) I...

    Indicator Base/Surface Gauge Shop Print

I got lucky when I first got into the trade, I bought a load of tools from a guy who left the industry for whatever reason. Included in the set of tools was a Squar-ol squareness comparator. After the toolmakers showed me how to use it, and after a great deal of practice, I've basically got the...

    Indicator Base/Surface Gauge Shop Print

Still no luck on a print, but I found the video this Stefan guy made. Good stuff. Thank you

    Indicator Base/Surface Gauge Shop Print

Hey guys. I've posted a handful of times around here. I'm a year two apprentice. A lot of the guys in the shop have multiple bases they use with their test indicators (lever style) on the surface plate. I have one myself, but I could use another. I'm thinking the kind with the knurled knob...

Depth of Cut - Surface Grinding Dry

Hey guys. Hate to start a new thread but couldn't find anything that quite answers my question. I'm an apprentice - just started surface grinding recently. I have to finish the length on some 1.25 in pins. I was wondering, do you guys have any strategies for hogging material without coolant...

Diamond Dresser - Regular Surface Grinder

This is what I ended up going with. Basically just copied one that one of our grinder hands had. We'll see how I like it, might whip something else up. Thanks guys!

Diamond Dresser - Regular Surface Grinder

Hey guys. Couldn't find a thread that matches exactly with what I want to ask so I started a new one. I'm a toolmaker's apprentice. About a 1.5 years in to my apprenticeship. My boss wants me to get some experience on the surface grinder. I was wondering, what do you guys use for your...

Squareness - Milling Multiple Parts From Bar Stock

I kind of like this idea here. I'd hesitate to sidemill when I get down to the last few parts but one of the toolmakers recommended that I use gage blocks on the opposite end of the vise so there's equal pressure being exerted. Might have to give that a shot. Thanks!

Squareness - Milling Multiple Parts From Bar Stock

Thanks for the kind words and advice! Much appreciated.

Squareness - Milling Multiple Parts From Bar Stock

It's a simple enough piece, just a small foot to mill in and a single hole to drill. The boss doesn't want to tie up the cnc mills. I think it's in large part a test to see how efficiently I can do a larger quantity of parts before he moves me to the CNC. It might well be retarded but I couldn't...

Squareness - Milling Multiple Parts From Bar Stock

Yep. You understood me correctly. I figured I'd have to mill the bar stock again before cutting off each individual piece. I appreciate the quick response! Dan

Squareness - Milling Multiple Parts From Bar Stock

Hey there. I've been a casual browser of practicalmachinist for close to a year now - or, right around the time I started my toolmaker apprenticeship. There's lots of great information here but I have one specific question I've been unable to find an answer to anywhere on the web. So, I'm...
