Hi, It may be likely that the current does return via the tail stock due to the oil film that exists in the headstock bearings. If it were me I would still be concerned and probably set something up to rotate with the work piece when welding, since it would only be needed for one revolution...- Henro

Hi, What is the line to line voltage at the time the motor has slowed and the amps increase? Check and report back... Edit: would also be helpful to verify the RPM the motor is turning when unloaded, if you have the means to do so.- Henro

Hi, I would be concerned about running the spindle above design speed. Meaning, running the motor at greater than 60 hertz.
