How have you tried to break loose the bull gear if the spindle is still installed? I'm trying to picture what that would look like.

I'm guilty of using a chuck jaw to drive a dog on a larger lathe, especially when I don't want to remove the chuck. Just chuck up some scrap, cut a quick taper to true it up and rock on.
10R and 10L are both a "heavy 10", not just the the 10L. It is just a nickname distinguishing them from a 10K which is just a 9a with an extra inch of swing.
If you wish to upgrade to a large bore spindle it is a direct swap.
If I were you I'd find a similar machine somewhere in the country...
