How to pace prospecting to match shop capacity?

So coming from a similar environment, not as owner but low level management. Sales having a good knowledge of workload is very important. Don’t start seeking work when you have about run out of work. Once you’re down to 3 weeks of work, start seeking work to turn around in 4. I know exactly how...

Who sells a decent 33pc Silver and Deming style drill set?

YG1 is what I like. Affordable and good quality.

At whits end with a employee

I’d say you have, but have you sat down and just had an honest heart to heart with him? It’s best to get as much of his perspective as possible to try to understand. He may be too far gone. But perhaps you can learn from this experience. After a firm but fair sit down conversation...

Silly question: Do you M09 at turret index?

I do. Got that habit from running a CNC lathe with a manual toolpost, just carried it over to turret lathes. After retracting to a safety zone just off the part I’ll M05, M09, then do the XZ tool change retract and M01.

Can I get some advice on milling off a hat.

Definitely rough to the profile with an end mill, or saw the excess off prior to op2. Depends on how much cycle time you have during op1. Then you can face as normal. Facemills grabbing thin flaps like this can be a disaster for sure.

Who Makes The Best HSS Twist Drills?

I like YG1 TiN-tipped 5% cobalt drills. I forget the name of the series. Best blend of price and performance. “Best” HSS drills though I would say Guhring.

Switching from Swiss to ST20Y??? Any gotchas I'm not seeing?

NGL man I haven’t heard much good about Haas’s quality control since about 2018, definitely since 2020. Lathes in particular. I would definitely be wary.

    kennametal or maritool ?

I’d go Maritool still. I like Kennametal. But you never know if what you get is gonna come from Bulgaria, Brazil, India… very occasionally Germany or USA. Maritool? USA all day long.

Which lathe to buy? New Doosan vs used Haas??

I think you’d be pretty disappointed going from a Mazak to a Haas. Despite the 25 year age gap between them I think it would feel like a major downgrade, at least in terms of the physical machine. Controller and user friendliness, sure, Haas has a lot of machines beat. But. Plus they do NOT...

    My last Haas arrived.

That sounds about right for Haas. Our 2018 DS30Y is a huge lemon, mainly due to the control (but also a ton of mechanical issues like whoever put it together was in a mad rush, like your mill). After a couple of measly attempts Haas said nope, we’re not sinking any more money into debugging...

    Haas ST-20Y Indexing question

I would say it would depend on how your chuck is mounted. Some chucks have multiple drive dog holes, so even the chuck may be mounted differently. Although if it never comes off that wouldn’t matter. I myself would always indicate one side of the bar parallel to Y and set C0 there for the...

    New CAM software

I’ve been using Solidcam for about 6 years. I like it. I do think some features are over-hyped. But it depends on your shop and the work you do. The biggest drawback for us? Good luck hiring someone who knows how to use it. In this area anyway, every shop is using Mastercam or Esprit. If we...

    Thinking about starting a shop...

Here’s a thought. Mind you, you know your area better than any random fella on the internet. But, machine shops are quite prevalent. Sometimes I think too prevalent. It can be such a tight, competitive business that there isn’t much room for error unless uou magically find that one niche...

    Spindle Taper Maintenance

I really like this. It’s quite interesting. I’ve always wondered about spindle grinding too. We have a lot of issues with tool stickage in our Haas VF3. But none of the other 5 Haas mills. Always figured all of our machines need reground, other than one that’s had its spindle replaced in the...

    Set Up Pricing

Especially for job shop work, I look at it similarly. I don’t stress about whether it would take 1 or 1.25 hours to set up and 30 or 35 minutes to run. Call it two hours. For one offs or low qty runs I think that’s best. Work off of one hour increments. 2, 3, 8… whatever. Unfortunately we...
