LeBlond Regal 13 and small diameter work

That has probably not changed much. Prices on all imports have steadily gone way up over the past 5-10 years, particularly ones from Asia. The price is right for entry level machinists and some businesses and you are way better off with PM than run of the mill competitors. You get just so much...

Achievable tolerances on a hobby lathe

Just like old times. Are Wip, Donie, Forrest still posting? I'll try to remember more names of the old guard.

OT: Cuts and burns from long hard experience. Treatments that work for me.

I always use a sewing needle sterilized with alcohol. A Stanley knife may not be able to raise the splinter enough to get a grip on it. The needle can get into or enlarge the entryway for the splinter and flip it up exposing enough to grab it with tweezers. After that I use special...

LeBlond Regal 13 and small diameter work

How about a Hardinge toolroom lathe, an HLV-H, used in good condition, ready to go to work. Another alternative would be a new toolroom-sized lathe from Precision Matthews which should be as precise as your LeBlond Regal 13.

Motor on headstock of Brown & Sharpe #13 universal grinder single or three phase?

Thanks for the extra feedback, thermite. I am very budget constrained so will have to work my way through all this. I think fixing the problem may run into money I don't have to put into it, i.e. any consultant or components and I am not experienced enough to troubleshoot and rebuild. Converting...

Motor on headstock of Brown & Sharpe #13 universal grinder single or three phase?

How about a Baldor bought around 10-12 years ago? That describes mine and its new in box. The spindle drive motor has a pulley and belt connected to a pulley on the spindle so as you suggest 1 or 3 phase might not be an issue. That is good news. Someone else suggested the finish would be...

Motor on headstock of Brown & Sharpe #13 universal grinder single or three phase?

Hello John and thermite. I am glad you all are still visiting PM. I spent years reading your posts. Indefatigable is the word. Hope you are doing well. I strayed from PM to Facebook machinist groups and started one of my own (Creative Machining Projects). I just barely get by with electricals...

Motor on headstock of Brown & Sharpe #13 universal grinder single or three phase?

Is the 120 volt 15 amp 60 cycle 1/6 hp motor on the headstock of a Brown & Sharpe #13 universal grinder single phase or three phase?

OT-Unexpected Death of a Parent-Tips for Working Alone?

Please accept my condolences. It is extraordinary for someone that age and so active to be taken. I'll cut to the chase: 1) What kind of farming do you plan to do 2) do you plan on a diversified farming operation 3) how close are you to markets 4) I recommend natural (organic but noncertified)...

spring steel wire / music wire

[Edit: this is for hummers who like to stand while feeding - maybe it's easier to pose for photos or something - I agree, they fly while feeding] Just make a little balanced lever like a seesaw for the birds to perch on. Attached to the end of the lever on the inside would be a small springy...

    Introduction of Dutch watchmaker

Some (many) of the Yahoo groups are moving to groups.io and your group might migrate there at some point. Other machining forums have already gone there, hardinge mill and hardinge lathe.

Flattening Arkansas Whetstones In The Lathe

You write: "Putting it in the lathe with creative shimming and a shopvac I was able to sneak up on the high spots and introduce minimal stress to the stone. A few of the harder grade stones are over 11” and 5” wide. They give super expensive natural stones a whole new definition of expensive...

Flattening Arkansas Whetstones In The Lathe

That's a really bad idea and a completely wrong way to flatten a sharpening stone. Better ways are: 1) buy a ceramic flattening stone designed to flatten sharpening stones. They have diagonal grooves cut into the surface. Any woodworking tool dealer will have this and always those who carry...

Protecting this future of this Amazing Forum Practical Machinist

Forklift yellow will do, has a nice ring to it. Amazing how collectors will think up reasons to pay more for things. Good you got more money for it rather than less because of the color. It seems yellow sports cars and Spring weather go together. I once had an MG TD. The shop gets continual...
