No need for VFDs, a very simple and cheap pillow block /pulley arrangement will work fine. A smaller pulley on the motor shaft, a larger pulley on the pillow block shaft and you have reduced the pillow block shaft speed. Some simple math and you can get any speed you want.

The guys that do this for restorations generally make the muzzle end a very tight fit often with a step on the liner and in the barrel, TIG weld the seam then face it off.

I had the same problem, What I’ve been doing for the last few years is after using the bluing salts and it cooled down a bit (less than 100 deg F) I will transfer the bluing salts to a 5 gallon plastic bucket with airtight lid.
More than likely HD contacted the manufactures, telling them to stop selling to our competitors or we will stop carrying your products.
It’s an old Wal Mart tactic.
Then once HD becomes the major retailer of these brands they can then dictate the quality and price point. Ie.. make them...
Since I make a lot of octagon barrels, the 4 jaw scroll has become indispensible, it’s also a great “General Purpose” chuck, Round Stock, Square Stock, Octagon Stock …all no problem. Hexagon stock might be a problem. All three of mine are Bison, they seem to hold their accuracy fairly well...
Havent use a 3 jaw scroll chuck in years, all my lathes are set up with a 4 jaw scroll chuck, that way I can work on round and octagon barrels
