Hot water in plastic? No thanks. I actually don't use a french press. I do an immersion brew process, like a french press, but after the brewing period I pour the grounds through a stainless steel screen into my mug. I have had the impression that 9918 is not quite as good as typical mineral oil emulsions in this regard. I use a 10% concentration which probably improves the situation over using a 5% concentration. I forgot about Castrol Syntilo 9954. Looks like that one is suited for tough to machine non-ferrous materials. Castrol only makes three full synths last I checked, 9913, 9918, and 9954.- prime_mover

That's another nice thing about the full synth (9918), it's so water soluble that mixing and separation aren't a consideration, and parts washing in plain water works fine, especially warm water. I use 5 gallon buckets of RO water for parts washing, and when it's not so clean anymore I pour it...- prime_mover

I don't think cutting a hole in the back is an option on the old model because the square cross beam that the frame sits on is right there in the way. With the old model I think having the auger may be worse than not having one. The only mod that can be done is cutting the sump windows larger...- prime_mover

I'll add that the old model Mini doesn't even have a rear opening to the sump. Only two tiny square holes on the sides, and on one side it's mostly inaccessible because of the coolant pump.- prime_mover

Ok, I think yours must be the redesigned (last gen) version which has a roof and larger openings to the sump. The Haas youtube channel has a video from Aug 21, 2015 which introduces the redesigned mini-mill so presumably they started selling them right around that time. Mine is the old model...- prime_mover

I do own a 2013 mini-mill and yes the chip management is retarded. What I don't understand is how that big tray actually fits into the machine. Maybe things are different on the last gen model, or you've got a machine without an auger?- prime_mover

Mcmaster-carr sells sheets of inexpensive filter fabric material in various micron ratings. I've used it and it works well.
