I have a 14 x 6 tie bar and I live in West Central Illinois too! You must be north of me a few miles from your comment about how far the lathe has traveled.
I remember reading magazine articles in the early to mid '70s about .223 chambered bolt guns not shooting well and speculation was that chambers were to blame. Authors opined that the .223 would never catch on and the .222 would reign supreme in bench rest competition for the foreseeable future!
McMaster- Carr did sell a small pack of several soft polymer sheets as a sample to help customers choose a material that was right for the job at hand. I have no idea if they still do.
I have a Lewis shaper. I was recently fortunate enough to find a really nice shaper vise for it although it is not a Lewis vise. As these were sold in kit form, details such as handles were not furnished so owners used what they had/liked. I might change a few of these little things some time to...
I see there is no table support but there are two machined pads on the topside of the base. I wonder if a support could be fabricated and bolted to those pads? I can't buy it; I'm very machine poor but do have a small shaper that I use some and love it.
I have a 5V to MT2 adapter that I use the drill chuck from my lathe tailstock in. Some people talk about modifying R8 tooling to fit 5V. I have intended to order a collet holder to modify for some time now and maybe a shell mill arbor.
I realize Vernon was only brought up due to similarities but my Vernon will NOT take an LB collet. It takes the collet with the step at the bottom. I bought an LB to try because online literature suggests they might fit some machines. I received one collet with the machine and made more. I...
The Hendey collets very long and therefore an adapter will stick out a long way from the spindle nose. I might buy them if you decide to go another route. I have a lever closer that might fit your lathe if you prefer that to a hand wheel.
I have had my cone head lathe apart many times and the bull gear is what is tight on the spindle for me. Once I got the lathe back together, the floating journal for the left bearing didn't turn consistently under power; it spun on the spindle. I made a key to fit it. I have photos and have...
