TL-1 Lathe via a rotary phase converter in the UK

Haas UK website says it can run off single or three phase power so that's fine. The website also says, "CNC Toolroom Lathe; 16″ x 30″ (406 x 762 mm) max capacity, chip enclosure, 20″ (508 mm) swing, 10 hp (7,5 kW) vector drive" That's the same kind of marketing they did with the OL-1, yes I'm...

TL-1 Lathe via a rotary phase converter in the UK

Not sure about the new control but some years back when I was renting a workshop that only had single phase I asked Haas about the OL-1 and the rep advised the TL-1 as a more versatile lathe that could be switched to run off 240v single phase from what I recall, I would look into that route...

    looking for trouble

That Mori SL-2 and the MV40-B are probably pretty safe options, I'd take those over anything Haas any day. The Hitachi Seiki though, easy pass, I've seen a few in person and they look like they would have been super nice machines when new with loads of features MTBs tout as new and innovative...

What Supplier Nonsense are You Dealing With Today?

That sounds normal, lower priced item probably sells faster because cheaper = better right? But lower priced items may have a lower profit margin so priority for manufacturing goes to the higher priced ones so demand can be kept up with, when I have a lot of my own products to restock priority...

    lathe thermal growth mitagation solutions?

Nothing like the OP, on the lathe I use the most (Emco Turn 325) if I stop for lunch and leave it sitting it'll drop 0.005mm/0.0002" to 0.01mm/0.0004" on diameters and then be back to how it was after two or three parts. I'm also in the mindset of not to let it cool much once it's warmed up...

What Supplier Nonsense are You Dealing With Today?

I know we all love to complain but I placed an order with the above supplier last week and I got the right material in the right quantity at the right time, lovely! No sticker shock on the alu bar either which is a bonus. Hopefully they've turned out some of the iffy staff and have better people...

    Emco 320 parts catcher

Check the solenoid valve that controls it, if that is sticking then it won't retract normally, if it is sticking with the air turned off to the machine there will be resistance pushing it back by hand, after 30 seconds or so of the air being turned off the whole system should lose pressure...

to scrap everything and start over or keep slogging along?

That sounds like it was all going fine until one guy came along and started on a whole "back in the shop I used to work at we had this and it did that and it was so much faster and it was shiny", I've seen similar things before although not in a machine shop, some people really can't stand a...

What Supplier Nonsense are You Dealing With Today?

One thing I've been caught out with that supplier is ordering 3 meter bars and not getting 3 meter bars, more 2.8 meters, unfortunately when that happened I noticed far too late. Now when delivery comes I'm there with a tape measure, if they're quoting and charging for a 3 meter bar I want a 3...

What Supplier Nonsense are You Dealing With Today?

Does the second one happen to start with an 'Aa' and have a 'co' in it's name? If so I use said supplier for most of my alu bar, there is one person in the office who I always try to get to sort my orders out as she basically always gets it right but otherwise it's generally the wrong grade...

    Connecting with Ancient HAAS Machine

Unfortunately I can't give any advise on setting up monitoring but I am curious, what live data are they expecting to get and do with it? I can't imagine the lathe is going to provide much valuable information beyond what can already be seen from physical output, scrapped parts, broken tools...

    4x6 ups label printer needed

I had one of the non-branded Chinese printers for a while and in general the printer worked well for the price, the software was not straight forward to install though, the print was always fairly dull although perfectly acceptable and it had some oddities such as if it ran out of labels mid...

X axis motion is backward on a Haas CL-1

That first photo looks like a really bad setup imho, Hardinge have been building CHNCs for 40+ years now with that style of octagonal tool plate and I bet you wouldn't see many experienced operators set those up like that, personally I'd switch a few of the OD tools out for boring bars/threading...

X axis motion is backward on a Haas CL-1

When I bought my CHNC I had been teaching myself very basic programming on a benchtop Chinese CNC lathe, not exactly pro operator, the CAD software I used initially allowed me to set the tool orientation, surely that is possible in a far higher end program like Mastercam? From what I have seen...

X axis motion is backward on a Haas CL-1

My Haas OL-1 and Hardinge CHNC are both the same, the tools (assuming right hand) all approach from the operator side of the spindle so naturally X+ is moving towards the operator. I don't actually see the issue, I frequently mount right hand and left hand tools and switch between what is...
