tooling jim,
saw you're an experienced machine guy. we had noise in the spinde thrust bearings on our boyar-schultz grinder. front bearing sealed - felt and appeared okay so we left it. rear bearing was bad, grinding with a broken race.
we bought a new rear spindle/thrust bearing and packed it with regular grease. after an hour or so of use we started getting some bearing noise.
do you know the appropriate lubricant for such high-speed bearings? guys at the bearing store didn't know. no sign of any internal lubrication going to that or the front bearing. no lube info in the copy of the boyar-schultz manual i downloaded from this site.
we're blacksmiths/hardware makers - got a bunch of machines but they're just tools to us. we can generally keep presses & hammers and such going, but machine tools aren't a strong suit. our web site bvforge.com my e-mail [email protected]
thanks for your input on this site.
