    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

Good day, I actually finished hardening and tempering the part itself - a 6" diameter roller, 4.5" high with a 1.8" bore. Hardness tested as 57RC. Very pleased with the results. This piece soaked 3 hours at 1832F for hardening, and at 482F for 2 hours tempering, did that twice. wondering if I...

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

Sure been a big help sir. So for take 2, I took it out of the oven at 1832F this morning. Once it was cooled down to 40C I took a hardness test and it rang at 57HRC. Its in the oven again for tempering now. Will hardness change at all after tempering?

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

I read somewhere to "begin temper when cool down temp reaches 122F." I wonder why that would be, what are your thoughts @Jatrox So I will fire the furnace up during the night and then it should be ready to take out and unwrap sometime in the morning. I will skip the stress relief like you...

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

I would say it did get hot enough, 6.00" diameter, 2.00" bore and 4.5" wide - it was at 1832F for 3 hours. But yeah I did not remove it from the oven to cool down. That makes sense. I will try again and take it out of the oven for cool down. Thanks a lot for the info. EDIT: How would this...

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

Yes, I tested the hardness after tempering. I will bump up the time and try it again. I did have the part in the kiln while it was preheating. Once heat treating was done I actually just let it cool down with the kiln to 122F before the temper, so it took something like 7-8 hours to cool. Would...

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

It actually does have a programmable ramp controller, this is the oven I am using: https://www.soundingstone.com/collections/skutt-electric-kilns/products/skutt-kmt1018-3-pottery-ceramic-kiln-208-or-240-volt But would the oven internal temp and the test part itself have different temps? The part...

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

I took a test piece out of the oven - take 1 results: The piece is a dull gray color, looks like it did not oxidize at all, so that step looks good. As for the hardness, it measures as 22 HRC and we were looking for 58-60 HRC so we definitely need to improve that. Where would you guys look for...

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

What color am I looking for in the part after heat treating? I did put a few pieces of paper towel in the bore but i imagine they burned up in hurry.

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

If it would be one part only that we need then sure, we'd let the pros do it. But for me, I like to do things on my own, ovens for doing small parts are not at all expensive. But I hear you - should probably try on a smaller piece first. Never heard of the paper towel trick, I will do that. So...

    Heat Treating D2 Tool Steel

Good morning everyone. Trying my hand at heat treating D2 for the first time. The parts are rollers for a tube mill - 6" diameter, 4.5" high with a 1.8" bore down the middle. I attached the process I intend to follow, put together from a few resources online. I will be using a ceramic furnace...

Turret Alignment - Mori Sieki NL3000y

It seems to be that the locating ring needs adjustment. The tool is fine when I rotate it 180 degrees, and similar results in the pockets.

I did try different tool blocks hoping that was the issue. It wasn't.

Turret Alignment - Mori Sieki NL3000y

Good day everyone. I need to perform alignments on our machine. I have attached a link with 2 short videos of readings I am getting when I place an indicator in 2 different positions. I am unsure how to proceed. I tried multiple tool holders, with the same results. The pin I am using is ground...

    Off Center Milling

It looks like the Y-zero position was not dialed in correctly, I re-indicated and the new boss is much better. Which leads me to my next question - when the boss doesn't measure 1.50" and I need to offset it, is there a way to do so at the machine? I can always go into my cad model and adjust...

    Off Center Milling

Hello everyone. I am milling some off center bosses in the mill/turn with live tooling. See photo. When I measure the boss 2 different places 90 degrees apart, it will measure 0.01” difference, so the boss is not concentric. This needs to be addressed, and I am curious what you guys would check...

    Mill/Turn Cam Shaft Help

This part has an OD of 2.5", 9" long. What I had in mind was starting with a 3" shaft and just milling the hex into the shaft after the turned features. This is all to be done in the mill/turn. Boss to boss we need to hold a tolerence of roughly 2 degrees.

    Mill/Turn Cam Shaft Help

Hello everyone. I need some ideas for a job I am setting up for shortly. I am making some cams in our mill/turn centre, there are threaded knobs on the ends and once they are completed the ends have to line up. What is the best way to achieve this when I take the part and and rotate it back into...

    316L SS Production Drilling Options

Good day everyone, I have a production job where I am drilling 316L stainless 1.125" deep, 13/16" diameter. Right now I am drilling with HSS, and it takes 30 seconds a hole. I'm thinking I can improve the drilling cycle time with a better drilling option. What options are available for me?

Live Center Removal on Mori Sieki Lathe

Thanks for your advice everyone, I appreciate the feedback. Pushing against a tube and using a bigger hammer seemed to do the trick, finally got it out! Would you guys reccomend using lubricant or Anti-Sieze to make it easier to remove in the future?
