    Queen City Grinder

I'm considering a Queen City grinder - 12" 1 HP 3 phase with pedestal. Appears to be complete. I'm wondering what the value of such a grinder is? I realize value is a relative thing - just looking to see if the asking price ($300) is reasonable in the south east. Thanks Rick

WF & John Barnes Drill Press

You are correct Tom. I've had this floating around the shop for 20+ years. I"m likely going to sell it to someone who has an interest in the collection aspect - maybe someone who has a huge version and wants to display the range of machines in this category. Rick

WF & John Barnes Drill Press

This project is complete except for one element - first a few pictures Now for the missing element = I have a motor shown earlier in this thread. I believe this drill press was intended to be powered via an overhead flat belt drive. It came to me with a 7/8" flat belt roughly 36" long...

Your approach worked Tom - I sprayed the chuck with PB Blaster which got it moving, blew it out and then oiled it. Seems to be working fine now. Rick

I'm going to try your approach Tom - see if I can get it working via a sokvent soak. Rick

So I'm getting down to the final pieces of this puzzle. The chuck that came with the drill press is an ETTCO #1 keyless chuck. I'm wondering f anyone has experience with disassembling these chcucks? Rick

I had an offer from a fairly local black smith - Peter Ross = to make a lever for me. I went to his shop today. I created a long, picture heavy post on OWWM that I am going to link - if you are interested in the whole story. Here is the picture of the completed part

Sorry - I meant to note that - no shipping. I am in Winston Salem, NC Rick

    FS: Mobile Tool Stand

This stand came to me with a drill press on it – the press is way too high on the stand so it has to go. I am committed to not keeping things I don’t have a use for (we’ve all said that). It is shop built – very well constructed and heavy, - Too heavy to ship. The top is 18” x 27” and the...

Tom - I had a motor once that displayed that random start direction problem. I'm trying to remember what the problem was. I "think" I had a wire interfering with the centrifugal switch operation. Freed that up and it worked fine. Rick

Thanks Tom - I believe you may be correct that the lever needs to drop a bit. What do you thin about thickness - the prototype is 3/8" thick. I need to order some material so that dimension is pretty critical. Any thoughts on cold rolled, hot rolled steel or cast iron? What motor problems...

A progress update - I have been working on the motor (it had a broken stator wire that needed repaired) - got through that, reassembled and everything is working fine. Starting point Final product The other area I have been working on is the belt shifter lever/ I made a wooden prototype...

    Western Electric Vintage Motor

Metlmagpie - that looks like something I was thinking about. A vintage look but designed for safety. I think I'm going to go with that - now just need to decide what size will blend in appropriately and still allow enough room for the addition of a toggle switch. Rick

    Western Electric Vintage Motor

I had to google that Jim - I like the look and it seems to fit the era but not sure I want an open electrical connection like that. Truth be known - this motor and drill press will likely never be used except for demonstration so maybe the knife switch concept would be OK. Why is it called a...

    Western Electric Vintage Motor

So I'm still thinking about/looking for a switch option for this motor. I like this WT switch but the motor is clearly not walker turner - although the mounting rails it came with are badged driver line. Any thoughts or suggestions for something similar to this - again looking for a...

Yeah I was thinking the drill press was originally overhead line shaft driven. Rick

    Western Electric Vintage Motor

Thanks Stephen for the oil recommendations - I was planning on 30 weight but I will change direction. There are no wicks per se - It has bronze bushings and each has an "arm" that sits on top of the bushing. There is also an oil reservoir under the bushing. I am thinking the :arm" is an oil...

    Western Electric Vintage Motor

Hey Jim - the motor has an internal brush ring with 4 bruhes. It also has a start mechanism/switch on the rotor shaft. The brushes do not lift off the commutator. Rick
