    Plate Beveling

Anyways....for thick plate you can't beat O/A for a clean cut. And, I might be wrong, but I think O/A doesn't leave a nitrided edge

    Plate Beveling

Sumpin' like this. I mean..........not like it really matters I guess. Just a matter of semantics.

    Plate Beveling

Those were my thoughts. I've occasionally done a bevel where the plate is so close to the edge it needs one, and you can't weld on the backside. But I tend to look at that as a partial pen weld with a narrow land.

OT: Replacent lens for cataract surgery

If you've had one eye done, you probably have one eye that's in a different focal plane. That "bad" eye is still bad.

18" and 24" dial caliper brands

Verniers are quite readable if you have the ones where the scale is 50 thou. The ones with the 25thou scales need a damn loupe to read.

OT: Replacent lens for cataract surgery

You must have two different focal lengths, or you won't be able to see anything close without glasses............which won't help with far vision. You can get a prescription for such glasses, but my surgeon said it was unadvisable. He strongly suggested near, and far, lenses. I've only gotten...

Enlarging Bore of Heavy wall tube

A guy with a line boring setup can do that. Need to fixture the tubing to something solid to take the torque, but not really a big deal. Heavy equipment guys are the ones to call about pricing, and whether they'll take it on. Only thing to think about is.........what kind of tubing you have...

Camlock spindle - what is supposed to happen?

The operative word was "hammer", not tap. It was pretty doggone tight. Now it'll come off with a good smack from the heel of your hand, or a tap with a small plastic head hammer. I remember looking at various discussions at the time. The consensus was that a "perfect" fit was unattainable...

Camlock spindle - what is supposed to happen?

I'd say that probably about 90% of the parts I make have to fit a worn companion/mating part. In most cases it's impossible to machine the worn area due to the size of the machine. I go oversize, then use ink to smoogie finoogie the large bore/flat surface etc to accept the new part. Blue...

Camlock spindle - what is supposed to happen?

When I bought my lathe(D1-4), the 3 jaw fit perfectly, but you'd have to hammer the 4 jaw off the spindle. It was too tight. Before doing anything, I blued the spindle taper, and chuck mating surface. First, I only blued the chuck, then determined where on the spindle the blue was...

Need to source type of steel bolt for welding a finger lever onto

Last thing you do is quench a weld. The only hope of survival is a slow cooling process. You actually want to keep the heat in the joint for a protracted period after the weld is made. This lowers the stress placed on the parent metal as the weld cools. Post heat, or slow cooling, allows the...

Need to source type of steel bolt for welding a finger lever onto

Any flux core wire, or 7018, will suffice. It won't hold the Brooklyn Bridge, or anything critical (your MIL), but it will probably still be there 20yrs from now. You can get all technical, and start talking about the HAZ, but it's not critical for something like this. I'm as anal as the next...

Need to source type of steel bolt for welding a finger lever onto

Welding Gr5 fasteners to mild steel is a common thing. Just get it hot. If it's to support your Mother In Law..........stick to a strict WP(preheat, interpass temps, post heat, and proper filler material)...........................If it's for a set of clamps.........just weld it.

Question of finish on manual lathe

I think that if you're concerned with making parts, more so than beauty.........1018 is a good mainstay. So are the other mild steels in the structural category. I seldom exceed 400rpm. It's a thing with me. I spent too much time rebuilding the headstock to run it, what I consider, hard...

Question of finish on manual lathe

It was positively dripping with sarcasm............or light hearted humor. Take your pick.

Question of finish on manual lathe

Following that logic, a guy should preheat his steel before turning it, or preheat the insert.

Question of finish on manual lathe

I'm surprised nobody saw that the feed rate is way too fast. It looks more like threading. Drop back to around .004 to.005/rev, and it'll look better. Then go to your slowest feed rate for the finish cuts. IMHO, a better insert for a smaller manual machine is the CCMT insert. They give a...

    Flap wheel price

I still buy from them. Been trading at their store in Tulsa for many years. Aside from convenience, it gives me a chance to grab a Carl's Junior when in the big town. Their stuff is pretty good. My small mill, and lathe, came from there. As well as a ton of tooling. The lathe had bad...
