15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

lighting will be on a separate branch circuit(s). Yeah I know it's a long shot but just look at the darn meter when the thing trips on. Rule that out.

P&W No. 3 Precision Bench Lathe

P&W made two versions of this. The older one was type 3 - plain bearing headstock, the newer one was called a 3C and had a larger spindle with ball bearings, underneath drive. A comprehensive discussion: http://www.lathes.co.uk/pratt&whitney/index.html The plain bearing, older lathe can be...

    AXA or 0XA for a South Bend 9" (Model C I think)

You *could* put a lift block under the 0XA type, but the AXA would be a better choice. Also probably less expensive, especially if you go aftermarket. There used to be a supplier for aftermarket zero-sized QC setups but they no longer sell them (littlemachineshop.com).

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

The other, unlikely observable would be the utility leg sagging for some reason. Have somebody put the compressor on line while you watch that. A null experiment is still an experiment - you can absolutely rule that out then.

OT - Old belt driven diesel generator for home backup?

Right but then how does my onan set (cckw motor) run without a regulator? Maybe time to visit that smokestack forum....

This one sets a couple records....Hardinge Lathe

I think even the 1/16 is 91. Larry is the newer steel dial compound you show in your pictures above acme, or square thread? Type E, I think?

    Resurrecting my 1941 Indian Four

If you have reasonably straight rims, new spokes and nipples, these wheels basically true themselves. Get the lacing pattern right, and figure what the dish is suppised to be, and it will go fine. Be sure to use the small bottle of special lube on the spoke threads when you lace things up...

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

Not discussed yet: what's the size of the incoming service? Given you can run the compressor with the aux. idlers on line it's *probably* good enough. Worth checking the manufactured leg voltage with and without the aux. idlers, *and* checking the utility legs as well. Compressors - hard...

Safe hoisting load on this truss beam

    1) purchase free-standing gantry hoist of the appropriate capacity. 2) install immediately below points indicated in your diagram. 3) if this seems expensive consider all the customers' cars below the indicated structural element.

    Grease on ways

Yep the early bridgeports also had those zerks that were a) designed to be used with a specialized oil gun, and b) fitted a standard grease gun perfectly. This is the most likely cause for the problem with this machine. Again don't ask how I am aware of this issue. =(

This one sets a couple records....Hardinge Lathe

The one dial is certainly conical, and from the visible part, the infeed dial isn't. This compound's been worked over a lot obviously so parts may have been switched out. I know the early chicago stuff has square threads, and the later items are acme. Flipping it over and looking under the...

OT: Motor Generator Experiment - Open Source Project :)

"If my videos stop 1000 people on this planet from buying motors and gears to run their own experiment at home,..." I think youtube videos are the perfect venue for your program. You should be all means concentrate there rather than any other forum.

Mitutoyo or Acu-Rite 2 Axis DRO,.....Any Concerns with either?

We have an older Accu-rite model on the hardinge at work, it's been a solid performer for about 20 years or so. I think we replace a scale a while ago and they were able to sell the scale and the adapter needed to go from their older connector system to the newer connector system. Good...

    Grease on ways

You may have found this out but you probably need to remove the table to get the grease out if it's heavy bearing grease. Don't ask how I know about this.

This one sets a couple records....Hardinge Lathe

That compound is unusual insofar as it has one conical dial (longitudinal feed) and one cylindrical dial for the crossfeed. With a bit of work it could clean up nicely. I've had worse come out OK and useable. Those collets are about 85 dollars each from hardinge now. You just won the lotto!

    Clever Frankenmill

Wow that's amazing. Somebody cut a lathe bed in half, and attached the one side vertically to the other one. The spindle is mounted to the carriage, and the horizontal feed looks like it came from the crossfeed assembly and the lead screw. Remarkable shade-tree engineering.

OT: Motor Generator Experiment - Open Source Project :)

"you wouldn't be wasting your time here trying to sell the tricks for a few bucks," a) who said it was a few bucks? I wa thinking 10,000 drachmas. b) no, I'm just enjoying your hilarious posts. Please by all means keep up the churn so we can all keep kicking sand on your shoes. Haven't had...
