    Schaublin 53

Adam, first off, apologies for derailing this thread. So let me try to make up for that... Marc's most recent PM post was in 2006 (click on his name, then click on the number just below "posts", in this case 67, and you'll see that). So you might be better off starting a new thread, rather...

Designing a spindle housing for a cartridge spindle

FWIW here is my thread about lapping to get a very round straight bore for holding the ID spindle.

Designing a spindle housing for a cartridge spindle

A couple of years ago I made a 60mm ID holder for an internal grinding spindle. So I looked at the specs. The point is that you need to have a really round hole to hold the spindle, because otherwise you deform the bearing races inside. So in the end, I bored an undersize hole and then...

    Help with some carbide inserts?

Aloris sells inserts for all of their tools, and has a nice online store, linked just below. I have bought a couple of their their T-profile HSS cutoff blades from there and am very happy with them. See this link: https://www.aloris.com/aloris-products/aloris-blade-inserts

Obtaining carbide inserts for hand scraping

In Europe this is a great place to purchase high quality carbide in various shapes. https://www.carbidur.de/ They have remainders at very low cost in many shapes, for example see here (after clicking below, select "Rechteckstäbe" for rectangular shapes)...

    Freebie Featherweight Scraping Gage

Hi Denis, I have two suggestions, both meant to be constructive: (1) on the backside, also put the roundness radii in mm (unless you replace the radii with angles) (2) post an .stl file so that those of us with access to 3d printers can print our own Nice work! Cheers, Bruce

    heidenhein LS803 and LS803D

I am fairly sure that an LS803 scale will not work with an LS803D head, and that an LS803D scale will not work correctly with an LS803 head. Another interpretation of "D" would be "Durchmesser" or "Diameter" for the lathe cross slide.

    heidenhein LS803 and LS803D

Both the read head and the scale are different. What length LS803 do you need?

    heidenhein LS803 and LS803D

LS803 has a 40 micron spacing on the ruler. So it provides one sinusoidal cycle for every 40 microns of linear motion. LS803D has a 20 micron spacing. It provides 2 sinusoidal cycles for 40 microns of linear motion. Often a lathe has LS803 on the Z axis and LS803D on the X axis. This way X...

    Hofmann Minibalancer MI 2000

If I was doing 10 of these or 100, that would make sense. But I am only doing one flywheel, and I am a raw beginner. This means that I won't get it right the first or second time. And when I paint the flywheel the balance will change. If I make three threaded holes which are the correct...

    Reconditioning My HLV-H

Seems reasonable, provided that you have blued and checked that this "reference surface" really is flat.

    Hofmann Minibalancer MI 2000

I learn so much from PM -- I had no idea that this stuff (Mallory metal) even existed! The density of steel is about 7.9 grams per cubic centimeter, 7.9g/cc. Lead is about 11g/cc. The densest metal (very expensive!) is osmium at about 23g/cc. Mallory metal is 17g/cc. Since the flywheel is...

Tips on balancing a 10" diameter (250mm) 3000 rpm pulley?

I was hoping to get some suggestions about how to balance the large motor pulley on an ID grinding attachment. I have an electronic balancer, so the question is, what to use for weights and how to attach them. See here for a photo and more detailed question...

    Hofmann Minibalancer MI 2000

First use of this balancer... I've been restoring a Studer RHU-450/500 inside grinding attachment. I got it without a motor, so purchased a suitable one then made up a taper mount and motor mount, and am now getting ready to put it to use. I thought it would make sense to balance the big...

Where can I buy OZ16 collets in imperial 1/8" and 1/4" sizes ??

Hi Karl, I composed my reply before I saw yours... These are wide-range collets, right? They are split through the back. I've gotten some 5c collets from this vendor and they are fine. They specify runout 3-15 microns, so if I get one from them I'll just check it and if the runout is too...

Where can I buy OZ16 collets in imperial 1/8" and 1/4" sizes ??

Thank you everyone for the helpful replies! OZ collets come in two flavours. One type has a wide clamping range, and has three slits that extend to the back of the collet. The other type (OZ16A = 410E) has a narrow clamping range and the slits do not extend to the back. The Namicam collets...

Where can I buy OZ16 collets in imperial 1/8" and 1/4" sizes ??

I have a collection of solid carbide 1/8" and 1/4" cutters that I'd like to use in the speeder that I just bought from Martin. The speeder uses OZ collets that are about 25mm diameter and 40mm long, which I believe are OZ16. My question: can someone please point me to a place in the EU (or...
