Home shop machine tools. misc, for sale

I hope you noticed I did not say or imply that the sellers were trying to maximize revenue. I merely pointed out the absolute futility of such an attitude. I am not speaking out of some lower orifice. I have personally completely liquidated 3 shops. Each time it was nearly six months of full...

Safe hoisting load on this truss beam

Sure hope they dust that thing every hour or so!

Safe hoisting load on this truss beam

I don't know. I'd be nervous spray painting that thing for fear the added weight would bring it down.

V1 of my hydraulic angle iron shear failed. Would appreciate any feedback so I can design a better V2.

If you can't make the blade, you could contact Edwards or Scotchman and buy one of their blades that fit their angle shears. At least you'd know it is tool steel properly shaped and heat treated. I own a decent angle shear on my ironworker. Almost never use it. I have learned how to make all...

Safe hoisting load on this truss beam

The tribal wisdom above is sound: it would have to be inspected by an engineer. Further, if said engineer said it was sound to lift and said it in writing with a signature, he the engineer would become liable in the case of a mechanical failure. That's why he might charge you $50k for the...

Home shop machine tools. misc, for sale

Hoo boy. Cleaning out a shop is always an enormous job. Cleaning out a shop in a month is close to impossible. If I were the family I would start having "estate free sale" days to whittle down the pile, and then be ready to hire scrappers to come in and haul out the machines. The mindset that...

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

The secondary machines were a 6.5hp Nardini lathe and a 3hp Scotchman ironworker. When I get back to that project I will try it with just the ironworker's 3hp boost. metalmagpie

new plate, went all in on cheap plywood cover

I like the idea of an oil-impregnated liner covering a steel plate! I have a 12x18" lapping plate that I had Blanchard ground, maybe I'll do the same for that plate. metalmagpie

Interesting surface grinder converted to belt sander/grinder

Setting up a surface grinder as a "surface belt sander" is commonly done by knifemakers. Particularly the type who forge their own Damascus steel (or whatever it should be called). metalmagpie

new plate, went all in on cheap plywood cover

I am no carpenter. I hate buying wood. I recently bought a super clean Precision Granite 24x36x4" surface plate on factory stand. It is in excellent condition, better than any other surface plate I've owned. Anyway, my shop is multipurpose enough so that the dust can be somewhat abrasive. I plan...

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

My electrically savvy buddy wants me to set up a camera on a tripod and record those meters during startup. I haven't done this because to me it seems that the generated leg sagging is the only realistic scenario, so setting up to confirm that is likely to be wasted work.

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

Not to atmosphere from tank. Between the air pump and the check valve going into the tank are the discharge tubes. I suppose you could also call them exhaust tubes. It is these tubes that are opened to the atmosphere by the factory unloader, and it is these tubes from which I would do a...

    Welding to a Coil Spring?

I believe the key to welding on spring steel is preheat.

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

My shop has a 200 amp panel. My RPC has 3 voltmeters indicating line-to-line voltages: Regardless of whether the extra machines are running or not (not counting transients during their startups) the meters show just the same as the above picture. Regarding your list, nos. 1 and 2 are...

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

My phase converter is home-built. I stand behind the design. Your tone leaves something to be desired.

those look like power ON delays and I need a power OFF delay ..

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

OK so I'm envisioning a solenoid valve connected in parallel with the mechanical unloader valve from the discharge tube to the atmosphere. The idea would be when the pressure switch toggles calling for the motor to start, that the solenoid valve would then open for a few seconds and then close...

15 hp RPC struggles to start 7.5 hp 3 phase air compressor - add cap?

I have had my RPC up and running for ten years or so without a hitch. Confident, I decided to rebuild a 3 phase air compressor despite persistent rumors they can be hard to start with an RPC. I spun it up today for the first time. It started fine with the tank empty. (There is no pressure gauge...

surface plate cleaner - Windex vs lighter fluid

My plate had a small area in one corner that looked like a sticker had once been there and been peeled off and then collected dirt. Probably not exactly that, because it was smoother than that would have been, but it had persisted for several years according to the seller. I wasn't particularly...
