Best Belt grinder belts for steel?

I left that job before I got a reliable technique down, but basically I'd press in somewhat aggressively and quickly move it across the belt while running as if I was just trying to gouge a line in a piece of rubber or something. The point is not to be even, since the unevenness breaks it up and...

A question about Paypal limiting my account

Depends on the bank. A lot of the limits are same-day transactions. I can go $2k+ day after. I think these limits can be negotiated. I also try to stick with a check if it's more than a grand or two.

A question about Paypal limiting my account

Paypal is currently going through some weird stuff. I don't trust them anymore, not for anything big. The fees don't help. I've switched anything like Paypal to Zelle, way easier to work with, hooks up directly with my bank, pretty much no fees, and definitely not weirdly overbearing like paypal...

Best Belt grinder belts for steel?

The Norton Blaze have dominated the market for quite a while so far as hogging and longevity goes. I used to get belts from Combat abrasives back when I did a lot of grinding and they were very close and a lot cheaper. Note: learning how to refracture belts really helps. When they become...

    QC Issues

One shop I worked for had the QC manager who was on paper pretty much top dog in the shop under the owner himself. The guy was a long-time machinist and was the most anal about perfection, ran a lathe for most of his career. From what I remember the owner had at one point pulled him off the...

    advice on late jobs

Yeah the tricky bit is what to do when if you've already promised you would get them X $4 parts by Friday. Not promising it to begin with is the obvious solution but can't roll that back after the fact

    advice on late jobs

Oof. Gonna be interested to read the follow-ups. In short, you're dealing with having over-promised and failing to keep your word to the customer. 90% of the time, it's best to let them know as soon as possible that the order will be late and you're sorry and there's nothing you can do about...

    Titan is peddling Syil?

I've been liking everything I've heard about those long before Titan got into it. Tbh they look pretty solid and I've heard good stuff from friends who've bought them. 30 taper instead of 40 but otherwise seems like it would make a lot more profit to cost ratio than your average Minimill class...

Titans of CNC Actually Useful For Training Fresh Blood?

I talked with him a little bit a few years ago, thanks for sparking my memory. I just saw some stuff on LinkedIn, looks like he's wanting to set up a regional group which would be cool to check out.

Titans of CNC Actually Useful For Training Fresh Blood?

Thanks, that's helpful. I've found that tough to do until we started getting some more bulk orders within the last few months. Very hard to find something for a feeder to do when it's an average of 5 parts, even if they're simple.

Titans of CNC Actually Useful For Training Fresh Blood?

Damn this is very helpful. To answer a few of your questions and give a bigger picture. Overall, my questions here are kind of open-ended. I'm not ready to hire anyone yet but likely will soon. My first "hire" is my wife, who wants to eventually be doing this with me full time. Since we're...

Shipping Tight-Toleranced Aluminum parts long distance?

Got it. Are my concerns about temp permanently changing dimensions pretty bunk then? Pretty sure Aluminum fluctuates only according to the temp and if it freezes or gets hot then goes back to 70* then it's fine, but since plastics don't do that just wanna make sure.

Shipping Tight-Toleranced Aluminum parts long distance?

So I've got a job coming up with some pretty simple and straightforward but tight tolerance 6061 parts (tightest is a 1.6" dia. bore with +.0005"/-0"). Nothing out of my wheelhouse for making them in spec, but I'm worried about shipping them since they're going to a customer across the country...

Looking for Prototyping Shops in San Fran Bay Area

Not bay area (Sacramento) but I or my wife run out there a few times a month for deliveries. Small shop, just the two of us and a few mills. Majority of our work is short run. Only mills in house, I sub out some lathe work but I'm starting to charge more for that to cover subbing risks so we may...

A humble request for mentor. Potential new shop.

Much appreciated. I'm generally of the opinion at this point that if a person thinks they can't be successful at all without financing (as opposed to just slower without financing) they definitely will fail, but it'll just be either bankruptcy or tied for years to payments as opposed to just...

Titans of CNC Actually Useful For Training Fresh Blood?

...so, all that said, everyone seems on board with @alek95 's advice to just pay for the dudes to go through the local community college courses? It also seems like no one's actually checked out any of the Titan courses, so I think I'll skim through them myself to check it out. I was super...
