    Non-Contact Seals for Hydrostatic Spindle

Is the oil in spindle always under pressure?

    Non-Contact Seals for Hydrostatic Spindle

Hello. I am looking for information on how to seal hydrostatic spindles. There doesn't seem to be a lot of specific information on this aside from reading patents. The spindles seem to use some combination of non-contact labyrinth seal, porous media aerostatic seal, or air pressure to keep the...

Looking for Info: Waltham Watch Co. (Van Norman) No. 1 Milling Machine

I was reading Kenneth Cope's book on mills and he has a predecessor to what might later have become the VN 10 or similarly sized mill. He credits the machine to Waltham Watch co. Figures 4-6. He cites his sources as being magazines and catalogs. I haven't gotten around to checking if this...

Solid Carbide Shank Turning Tool Holders?

A while ago I thought I came across some turning tool holders made of solid carbide. Don't remember if they were regular or for swiss lathes. Now I can't find it. Has anyone seen this or did they never exist? I'm not talking boring bars, I mean solid carbide shank turning tool holders. Thanks

OT: Need a Mentor I can frequently bother with questions

I'm a tool room machinist who is, lets just say, a looooong way from retiring. In 2 to 3 years probably half the people at my company will be retiring and I'm not sure what is going to happen next. (We can't find new people to hire). Anyway, I'm really interested in machine tool building now and...

Advice wanted for an apprentice beginning his tool collection

I'm not reading everyone else's reply but here is my own opinion. Firstly, not sure why you need redundant measuring tools unless the machines are far apart. Quality inspection tools aren't cheap. In my xp, you'll want a couple sets of allen keys not to mention a few larger than standard allen...

    I want a mill...which one to get?

I'll give you a serious reply but first it would help if we knew size and weight restrictions. I assume this is for some kind of home shop. Only knowing what I know from your first post I'd say get a Bridgeport. Quality BPs can be had for just under $2000. Parts and accessories are everywhere...

Class 40 Cast Iron, large "useful generic shapes" off the shelf?

Thanks for replying. WDS is basically exactly what I'm looking for. Cast in the USA is preferable.

Class 40 Cast Iron, large "useful generic shapes" off the shelf?

Hello. I'm looking around to see if there are any foundry's or cast iron suppliers who sell "generic" castings. I don't know what you would call it. I'm looking for class 40 or equivalent castings as large rectangular or square tubes 16" up to 20" or larger. Looking for off the shelf castings in...

    Prototrak MX2 Axis Fault

Thanks for the reply. I'm all for buying a replacement motor but the cable from the drive to the motor is hardwired into the motor. If I bought another servo motor I don't know how to make sure the connection is compatible or any issues with the encoder.

    Prototrak MX2 Axis Fault

I think I figured out why the "good" axis faults when I switch cables. I believe since the sensor wheel isn't moving (I didn't swap sensors) it thinks its blocked and cancels the jog. Which isn't weird after all. 90% sure my motor went bad but why?

    Prototrak MX2 Axis Fault

Greetings. Let me begin by saying I've already investigated this topic on the forums and looking at the brushes on my troubled motor was the first thing I did. Full Story: Y-Axis started giving me obstruction fault randomly. Eventually it would not move at all, giving me a fault code every...

Van Norman History (currently owned by?)

I'm wondering if Atlantic acquired VN from Gulf and Western or whether G&W acquired Atlantic along with VN and then Atlantic just built the mills. Pretty sure G&W got bought by Textron but I don't know when. Haven't had time to research it yet. I already found that Myron Bowling auction and...

Van Norman History (currently owned by?)

I will probably email them. I already went through a list of distributors from and old catalog and found 2 of them were still in business. I emailed them some questions but never heard back. Do you think VN made all the gears for their machines? I hear the hypoid gear for a VN12 is not a...

Van Norman History (currently owned by?)

I also read this somewhere. However I think we all know that companies keep old documents around forever. My shop has prints on file that we haven't made in 40 years. I think somewhere down the line someone had to make photocopies of all this stuff, but who has them? Someone from RPI or Atlantic...
