have any of you ever heard of "Niles Simmons" before?

So the real botch in all of this was people misreading Russia for so long. The French were apparently sure they talk Putin out of the current stupidity literally days before the invasion began. It is history - the key thing is to learn from it - carefully, with nuance.

    Titan is peddling Syil?

AND - aside from money, youtube "happiness" drives the algorithm, which drives new viewers. That dynamic is probably why Pierson (or somebody they hire) does some of the doofy stuff - the algorithm. That's why almost all channels, in almost all videos, will have a "like" and "subscribe"...

    Titan is peddling Syil?

Yup. And not just on "someone else's machine" but largely *with good examples to follow* When I first dove into this (after a career elsewhere) there was no youtube, and no PM - it was usenet and some magazines. PM helps a fair amount. Youtube shares a lot of tacit information sort of like...

    Titan is peddling Syil?

re youtube: there are some good ones, but they are pretty specialist. More "how to fixture this very odd thing that might move after machining" rather than "be amazed! we can mill a square out of aluminum that is Very Square!" I think machining youtube is like weight loss youtube/twitter/web...

    Titan is peddling Syil?

The other observation somebody made early on (sorry can't find it now in the zillion posts) that "entry level machines have gotten better" is true. The quality of stuff at harbor freight(!) has gotten better. Same for at least some things at home depot. And Tormach offers better machines...

    Titan is peddling Syil?

That's a fair observation. But I'll point out that what is now DMG-Mori went from from DMG sold via reps, to DMG sold via Ellison, to I think DMG-Mori sold by factory folks. In like 8 years. So changes in distribution aren't unique to asian machines.

Anybody have luck laser engraving barcode or qr code onto a cat-40 tool holder?

OK, I should provide more context, and will ask another question (great observations above): 1. The actual application is to allow fast random access OFFLINE to about 150 tool holders, generally with tools made up. (That is, rather than having a cabinet with a space for every tool#, many of...

Anybody have luck laser engraving barcode or qr code onto a cat-40 tool holder?

I have a fibre laser which I've used on lots of aluminum (haven't tried it on a tool holder yet...)

Anybody have luck laser engraving barcode or qr code onto a cat-40 tool holder?

Weirdly the searches I tried didn't show anybody talking about this. Idea is that every holder gets a unique holder ID, which is laser engraved with a barcode or qr code in some non-troubling place on the holder. These are unique numbers, easy to put in a database, read from a database, etc...

    Ox's Shop

When I moved into my current shop I poured 12" foundations with rebar for the then largest machines. Time passes, machines change, and having a 12" pad with a seam next to 8" is a problematic constraint. Especially since the 8" would likely have been just fine. Live and learn.

Tool numbers in machine VS master tool list numbers.

Load with G10 of course functions just fine, but doesn't solve the issue I am on about (but maybe I'm the only one who works this way.) I'll try to explain. In my (crazy, not commercial, shop) I use a set of mostly permanent universal tool numbers (across mills.) [40 taper mills - so maybe...

Tool numbers in machine VS master tool list numbers.

Can a program select the "bank" at runtime? (e.g. is there some syntax like T535 or some such to get tool 35 out of bank 5?)

have any of you ever heard of "Niles Simmons" before?

Skip the politics, I was a little surprized to find I'd never heard of this company before. (NSH company....) Simmons Machine Tool Corp is also discussed - never heard of them before either. (Guess I've led a sheltered life?)

OT: Building collapse in Iowa, causes?

edit: others posted this link while I was typing.... Another video I think useful: TL;DW - it appears that some people didn't grok that the beams holding up the floors were supported by the bricks of the exterior wall (see post above.) Said exterior wall clearly in disrepair. (And this was...

    US Artillery Ammunition Production

Military history is full of terrible lessons. In essentially every war since WWI, and perhaps before that, ammunition consumption has been vastly beyond what anybody on any side planned for. Those factories don't look soooo out of date to me - robots handling forges, marking machines, etc...

    CNCToolCat's Cat-House

I will note that some of the best winter performance advice (from the era when I drove Porsches) is that before you go for a costly 4x4, make sure you have 1st rate winter tires. Poor tires will cripple a 4x4, really great tires help most any 2wd. But my driveway is my driveway....

    CNCToolCat's Cat-House

Lots of places where 4x4 doesn't seem to make much sense, until you've lived through a "burst winter" in a place that doesn't really have what the midwest calls winter. Seattle metro for example. Not that much total snow, but quite a pile of it all at once, and we do get rightous ice storms...

2 New Haas Machines and ???

here's the thing about coolant - what often behaves well and works well in one shop seems to be a demon from hell in another shop. I presume some part of this is related to the water used in mixing, and some part in whatever tramp substances are on the work pieces, way oil, and so forth.

    Mastercam popularity

OK, some have pointed out key *business level* issues - training, safety, risk. Yes, people can learn new CAM systems (and to some extent should), but WHAT IS THE RETURN???? So your new staffer wants to use WeirdCAM, so buy them WeirdCAM. But nobody else in the shop knows how to use it, and...
