    Exciting Lathe Move

Some years back needed a bit of machining done before I had a shop, so we went to a FOAF's "home shop," which was more like a small compound in the sticks where he'd accumulated well over a dozen VMCs, turning centers, and other equipment that was being scrapped out. He was apparently something...

    Who owns a larger shop?

My primary trade is a wholly different one (HR software) but I’m sort of a “large shop” in that with a little over 300 employees, PE investors, 9 yards etc. While I participate in public forums (eg linkedin) relating to that, I post almost nothing there but bland promotional statements. My...

    Who owns a larger shop?

All the wrong ones, too. Most are easy to spot. Not all, unfortunately, at least not the first time.

    Entry level machine

Thanks. I’ll look into that. To be sure, the base mini mill becomes a $60k machine pretty fast since I don’t want a machine with a 10-tool ATC and an 8K spindle without rigid tapping. Yeah. I have their 1100 mill now and on paper the 1500 has everything that is making me want to replace the...

    Entry level machine

I’m in a similar boat. If I was ordering tomorrow it would be a Mini Mill with a 10K spindle but I feel like I’d be paying $10K towards Haas’s marketing budget or Gene’s hot wheels set. I feel like if you’re going for the DC1 you might as well go Syil and be done with it. The Tormach 1500 is...

Mixing processes (machining, welding, wood) in a 1200 sqft shop?

Yeah, fortunately that's less of a problem for me here. As far as they know I'm just a well-off guy with some serious hobbies which is mostly the truth. There is also a provision for a "home occupation" that doesn't require a permit so long as you stay small scale and don't cause any...

Mixing processes (machining, welding, wood) in a 1200 sqft shop?

    Yeah, it’s to the ridge.

Mixing processes (machining, welding, wood) in a 1200 sqft shop?

25' unfortunately, so not really practical. That's why I'm putting in a basement section. I might put the woodworking in there. I'm going to have internal stairs going down to it and with the bridge crane it would be practical to lower materials into it using the stairway. Your pole barn...

Mixing processes (machining, welding, wood) in a 1200 sqft shop?

😂 Appreciate all the advice on safety with dust. I will keep that in mind as I get into the ventilation/HVAC. not currently planning on doing large scale spraying or polishing, or powder coat. Would love to do anodizing but that’s a whole other pile of problems I don’t want to deal with...

Mixing processes (machining, welding, wood) in a 1200 sqft shop?

Yeah, that is definitely my big concern.

Why all the animosity towards Titan and others like him?

Right, that's the basic idea. But, the big game is what shows up on your home page, and what gets recommended to you. That's the secret sauce. If the algorithm sees that you watched "CRAZY CNC FAILS!!!!SAJDK" it will try to stuff a thousand more of those your way, but which thousand, and which...

Mixing processes (machining, welding, wood) in a 1200 sqft shop?

Appreciate all the ideas and experiences. I am planning on GTAW. If I was going to do stick or something to fix my tractor that would be rare and could be kept outside. 95% of my work is either small electromechanical assemblies or relatively small artsy-fartsy stuff. I'm not repairing heavy...

Why all the animosity towards Titan and others like him?

In the earlier age of Youtube there was a lot of room for people who were primarily real experts and practitioners to simply record themselves doing what they do. They either posted as a hobby or for the same reasons we all post on forums like these, or to advertise their business/trade. Then...

Mixing processes (machining, welding, wood) in a 1200 sqft shop?

I’m building a new shop next to my home and trying to figure what’s possible and what’s actually a good idea. Due to zoning and site limitations I’m limited on space to a floor plate of 28x44’. There will also be a basement of about 400sqft assume don’t find a rock ledge when we dig. My work...

    New To Machine Shop

I'm a business owner with ~300 people, completely different industry, do this stuff primarily as a hobby/side interest. If I was in your shoes, here are the things I'd be thinking about, roughly in order: 1. Make sure the business has given you clear goals and/or understanding of what it thinks...

    Boeing Assisted Suicide

Given the level of competence we’ve seen from management lately, if they were behind this there would have already been a huge outbreak of MRSA when the scientist who made it dropped the peanut butter jar he stored it in.

    Titan is peddling Syil?

I'll be in the market for a small machine in a few months once I know I'll have a garage to put it in (hopefully breaking ground in 2 weeks). Right now I'm leaning towards a Haas mini but was also considering this (X5) and maybe the new Tormach 1500. That video reminds me a lot of my current...

    Tormach's revenge

How useful is TSC on a 4HP machine that will likely spend its life making onesy-twosy parts?

    Tormach's revenge

Right. I was also thinking that setting up a facility to cast them is probably a bit simpler than an iron foundry in today's USA. Are Haas castings still domestically sourced?

    Tormach's revenge

I wonder if the bigger factor here is that it’s easier to make an E-G frame in the US? Agreed that anything v1 can be a crapshoot. The Haas is definitely the leading contender for me but if I had one of these I might not be shopping for an upgrade yet.
