The Gorton.....Again. Selecting bearings for spindle.

ok ill start searching for bearings by the pair that come with what I guess could be called "tolerance and install sides" papers. As far as the preload, since I misunderstood it and preload is all set at the factory where bearing is made, what preload is suggested? is there a rule of thumb for...

The Gorton.....Again. Selecting bearings for spindle.

I could be completely wrong with this but wouldn't the tightening of the nut at the top of uppermost bearing pair set the preload and take up what little space there is? Making it so the spacer is not super super critical? As I have understood the bearing sets are needed due to being ground to...

The Gorton.....Again. Selecting bearings for spindle.

So without buying them from the supplier or a dealer I wouldn't have a good chance of getting a true set would I? Since mine are unmarked with no suffix would i assume they are medium preload from factory or? Im finding the bearings with suffix for light and medium preload much easier than ones...

The Gorton.....Again. Selecting bearings for spindle.

So preload is set by the spacer if im not mistaken. Just tighten the nut on top of spindle? What is keeping me from getting these which have what i figure by the chart i found is universal mounting and medium preload? what would mine be with just no suffix? Barden bearings.

The Gorton.....Again. Selecting bearings for spindle.

Was just trying to put back in what I took out. Anyone know what they might have come with before? The 6209 was a lower level of precision(at least the ones I pulled up quickly) ill keep digging.

I might have looked at the wrong spec sheet, if anything these appear to be better.

The Gorton.....Again. Selecting bearings for spindle.

Other than there tolerance class of "normal" on SKF website any idea how I could compare it to the quality standard of the Barden? IM very uneducated on sourcing bearings. I don't know how I missed these though. I used bearing look ups but nothing with the same speed would come up.

The Gorton.....Again. Selecting bearings for spindle.

Hi all, I'm back. It has been awhile but i was able to remove my spindle after alot of effort. Decided on putting new bearings in it. 2 Issues I have at the moment are 1. I can not get the company who bought out the original manufacture of bearings that were in mill to contact me. 2. My bearings...

Gorton 2-28 again. This time spindle bearings.

Update: Took spindle out, did not mark where it mated in pulley due to me not doing it the first time due to not knowing to mark it (nothing looks to be worn or abused in this area so I'm holding out hope and will just have to make a test cut later to insure its holding good runout). Have run...

Gorton 2-28 again. This time spindle bearings.

I have had the spindle out once to remove the tool holder, but never been inside of the spindle. Is there any advice for taking it apart? from what I have been reading I should just mark the bearings and shim so I can clock the same way and that's it for anything special for reassembly? Is there...

Gorton 2-28 again. This time spindle bearings.

I was also able to get the back plate legible enough to make out that the bearings in spindle are lubed for the life of the bearing, so I guess unless noise or runout become an issue I will leave them alone. I do however wonder if the drip oiling system was removed by last owner at some...

Gorton 2-28 again. This time spindle bearings.

Ok that's much more available(and doesn't hurt the wallet as much) as the other stuff for sure. Looking at the manual i found for the 28 the 2-30 is the same process for lubrication. I am new to mills and apologize for my ignorance but i see no system for drip oiling on my machine or anyplace...

Gorton 2-28 again. This time spindle bearings.

The next question is what would be the equivalent to the pate grease. And further could anyone direct me to good equivalents for the rest, i understand that one of them is now owned by mobil.

That looks identical to mine. Id imagine the oiling for a 28( alighter model) would be the same.

Gorton 2-28 again. This time spindle bearings.

I have not seen any way to oil any part of the spindle on mine, could it have been phased out by then? I know that ill be removing the tool holders daily because just getting that first one out taught me enough to prevent it.

Gorton 2-28 again. This time spindle bearings.

Hi all, was able to get the tool holder out, had to use a press against draw bar to finally get it out. Had to use a large amount of kroil and wd-40 to help loosen it and someone had mentioned that there's a good chance the grease had been washed out by now(if there was any after 50-60 years)...

    Gorton 2-28 woes.

Hi all, have a few updates. sadly phone died so i was not able to take pictures. But I have located the nut that goes over draw bar and I hope will press out the tool holder. Any advice on this? I have the whole spindle removed from machine already. My movement in spindle that I was concerned...

    Gorton 2-28 woes.

So far I have very few pictures (won't be able to work on it again until Tuesday) but I'll post what I have, I removed the collar nut from the draw bar area by hand. Was not aware that it was supposed to help press it out. But I removed the normal draw bar by just using a crescent wrench...

    Gorton 2-28 woes.

Hi all, have a Gorton 2-28. First mill I've owned. When I got it all seemed well with machine. As far as I can tell the issue I have found is the only one. But a big one. I have not been able to remove the tool holder from the spindle. I have removed the draw bar and the collar/nut at the...
