Fadal 2016L coming: Any warnings/advise appreciated!

I have a 1992 VMC40 that's had its issues, but all-in-all it's been great. I had to have the spindle drive replaced, but it wasn't too bad. The drive screws can get pretty worn where they're used the most (the middle) and it can become impossible to set the backlash right. They're pricey to buy...

Overcome the Noisy Haas Coolant Pump?

It's a Rajamane. Never heard of them. And mhajicek, I would agree that it sounds like that, but I can't find anything, and I've heard others complain about the same issue with the new pumps.

Overcome the Noisy Haas Coolant Pump?

Hey All, We have a 6 month old Haas VF-2SS. It's the first Haas I've worked on and I like most things about it. But MAN is the flood coolant pump loud. I've seen others complain about the same thing on the new machines around the internet so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good way to quiet...

Fadal VMC40 Y-Axis Ball Nut Installation

Hey All, I did something foolish, which was to remove the Y-axis ball screw from the ball nut on my '92 VMC40. Now I've removed the ball nut, collected all the balls, and am trying to reassemble it. Inside the nut, there seem to be a couple ball catcher things that allow the balls to feed in and...

Fadal VMC40 Y-Axis Screw Coupling Question

Thanks Bob. I'll do that! I figured that was the issue but I didn't want to introduce a ton of rigidity.

Fadal VMC40 Y-Axis Screw Coupling Question

Thanks. It's a box-way machine. I would agree with the Turcite point except that it's so easy to turn the screw by hand. There's a 1" nut on the motor end of the shaft and I can turn it and move the table with very little effort. It's buttery.

Fadal VMC40 Y-Axis Screw Coupling Question

Hey All, I've been having some trouble with the Y-Axis on my 1992 VMC40. When rapids are set to 100%, it makes this strange shuddering noise when moving on Y. I'm also getting terrible position repeatability. When moving the table by hand, I noticed a "thunk" whenever I changed direction. I...

Fadal VMC40 hi/low Speed Change "squeak"

Okay I'll check that out. Thanks! As for the RPM, the mechanic was having trouble getting it closer but I'll look into it and yeah maybe tweak the drive a bit. Thanks all, I'll be back with results.

Fadal VMC40 hi/low Speed Change "squeak"

It sure is! I figured I might as well have a sense of humor about it!

Fadal VMC40 hi/low Speed Change "squeak"

Yup, two belts. It has two air cylinders attached to idler pulleys that tension either belt in turn. And yes. Nine and Two Thirds is both the name of my company and the number of fingers I have left...

Fadal VMC40 hi/low Speed Change "squeak"

One additional thought: In the low range, the spindle is actually running about 30 RPM over. In high range, about 60 under. Is it possible that the controller thinks the spindle is stopped in the low range when in fact it's still spinning slowly? Thanks, M

Fadal VMC40 hi/low Speed Change "squeak"

Hey All, Just had a new VFD installed in my 1992 Fadal VMC40. While running through tests, the mechanic and I noticed that when the spindle is running at, say, 500 RPM and then is changed to 3000 RPM, the air system engages the high range belt before the spindle has fully stopped and the belts...

    Rookie Tool Length Offset Question

    Cool thanks. I'll try this!

    Rookie Tool Length Offset Question

Hey all, After years of manual machining, I'm finally finding my way into the world of CNC. I have a 1992 Fadal VMC40 with the 88 controller. I have realized that I know absolutely nothing about TLO, even after reading loads of articles. Here's how I do it now: - Place 1" gage block on part -...

    Rolling Thin Wall Brass Tube

Thanks Jess. The soap and frozen water sounds like a promising lead, as I don't have nearly enough cerrobend (or Wood's metal) to fill the tube. Thanks all for the input.

    Rolling Thin Wall Brass Tube

That's a cool idea. I've used that stuff a bit, but got scared when I realized it contained plenty of lead and cadmium. As for the others: I was worried folks might say it's too tight of a radius. Annealing had crossed my mind so I may give that a shot. Thanks everyone.

    Rolling Thin Wall Brass Tube

Hey All, I'm not sure this thread belongs on this site, since it's not about machining, but I'll give it a shot: I'm rolling some 2" O.D. x 0.050" wall brass tubing for a bar footrail and I'm having lots of trouble. It's kinking, obviously. I'm using a JD Squared Model 32 tube and pipe bender...

    Mitsubishi Inverter Troubles

Hey all, I posted recently about the Mitsubishi Freqrol Z300 Model FR-Z320-7.5K-UL inverter in my 1992 Fadal VMC 40. It seems the brake resistor has been getting wayyyy too much current, enough to melt its aluminum housing (see pic 1) and create a fair amount of smoke. After testing, all of...

    Dangers of Working with Inverters?

Looks like it's the brake resistor. Is this a regen circuit issue? I have no idea what I'm doing...

    Dangers of Working with Inverters?

Well, uh, I think I found the problem. The silver (aluminum) unit that mounts to the heat sink has...melted. Is this the IGBT module? Further input and advice always appreciated.
