ot: vacuum motor
the central vacuum stopped working. i found a burnt fuse: fast 10a (5x20mm). it instantly burnt another one and a 20a fuse also. i took out the motor and the brushes looked good to me (doesnt mean much). plenty of travel. i connected the motor through a 10a automatic fuse. it ran but started... -

sagging of ferritic gray iron
i you take a "regular" camelback, maybe 30" long, support it on the two flat ends and come back a year later, would it sag by an amount that matters? lets say > 0.1µ.- dian

washer designation
i managed to find a source for 3/8" and 5/8" hardened washers (pretty rare around here). they are galvanized. one of them sais F436 but the other one has "QY" stamped in. is that some grade designation or just the manufacturers logo? (btw, F436 galvanized seem to be speced as 26-45 hrc. pretty... -

aluminum designation
i have an (obviously extruded) aluminum bar with A55w-5 written on it. does anybody have an idea what that might be? some proprietary code? there is A535 cast and 5527. -

new microscope
so i got this electronic microscope with a 7" screen thats supposed to have a 2000x magnification. now, if i look at a 20µ fibre it appears as 13 mm (650x) on the screen. then there is 1.5x and 3x magnification. 3x appears as 17 mm (30% instead of 200%, 850x). as i know nothing about optics the... -

power consumption of light bulbs
i have these "cornknob" led bulbs. they draw 0.045 amps at 231v. so 10.4 watts. measured with multimeter. if i plug them into a socket type watt-meter it shows the same amps and volts but 4.5 watts. what does this mean? i assume it might have to do with the crude capacitor power supply. but how...- dian

ls 501 scale (heidenhain)
all of a sudden one axis is dead, so i figure its the bulb. has anybody done a replacement? iv seen ballens thread on the ls 803, but i have no idea how similar they are. what i find weird, btw, is that the 10-pin sockets on the box have 5 or 6 volts on 9 of the pins. really?
