O/T- engine guys, help me understand this leaking gasket.

The gasket is from the valve covers on a Chevy big block. Actually, between the head and a cover spacer. Why in the world is it leaking at the screw holes, of all places? The visible side is the side that mates with the head.

What is the technical definition of 'rapid'?

I fully understand what it does, but what is the actual definition of 'rapid'? What does 25%/50%/100% rapid really represent? My observations suggest that it means the control will apply x% of max current to the motors to make them move with no (or very little) attention to accuracy. Am I close?

Does the control have to be on to charge the batteries?

This lathe (QT15N) has sat idle long enough to get the 08 - Battery Malfunction alarm. As I understand it, this is a rechargeable battery that gets charged when the machine is on. Does the whole machine need to be on, as in able to run a program? Or just the main breaker?

Speedi Sleeve / Shaft repair sleeve questions

I have a Gen VI BBC that has some pitting on the rear main seal surface. It's in a marine application, so the cause probably obvious. Rather than pull the crank and send out for grind I'd like to try using a shaft repair sleeve. I believe the correct part number to be SKF 99435. Looks like...

    Arduino/R-Pi and household appliances

As more (all?) household appliances move toward circuit board controlled operation I am beginning to wonder when I need to keep an Arduino or R-Pi on the shelf to maintain equipment. Most devices like ovens, washing machines, heaters, etc have core components that are themselves quite simple...

Seeking thoughts/opinions on older OSP controls and an MC-V4020

I kinda got the itch to replace my Fadal and I think I want an Okuma MC-V4020. Similar foot print and work envelope. Limited to 8000rpm vs the Fadal's 10k, but thru tool coolant and a chip conveyor offset that penalty, IMO. Specific questions- How quirky are the OSP 100s? Do they have major...

    Work holding/Fixture design resources?

I think I know what a basic fixture needs to accomplish (strength, location, repeatability) but am looking for resources on how make better fixtures. I'm looking for things like how to design for better repeatability, how to keep chips out of unwanted areas, ease of access, and hopefully other...

tips for safely working on motor drives?

Looks like my lathe spindle drive is on the fritz and before I spend $2900 to have it repaired, I'd like to remove some of the components and test them myself. The manual shows what values you need and I have the tools, but what I don't have is the experience. Can anyone share some tips for...

    QT15n coolant diagram

Does anyone have a diagram for how the coolant is supposed to flow on a QT15n? I'm trying to arrange some thru-tool drilling but I've not found a good way to do so. Also- there's a large manifold in the upper portion of the machine, above the XMFR, does anyone know how that is supposed to...

    Affordable insert drill recommendations

I'm on the hunt for an affordable insert drill in the 1" range, 25mm would also work. 3xD would be fine for depth. I run a mix of 6061, 1018, 1144s/p, and 4140ph...some 304 rarely. What I want is (1) drill that I can leave in the turret to pop holes for boring ops. I don't have thru coolant...

    High pressure air motors

Have any of your guys ever worked with high pressure air motors? I have a kooky idea that needs an air motor that will tolerate a case pressure of at least 250psi, preferably more like 1000, and develop about 10hp. I realize this is welllll beyond most shop air systems, but I've seen these...

How fast (ipm) will your lathe thread?

I was accurately cutting some 1/2-13 threads on my 1990 QT15n at 115ipm this week and it got me wondering just how fast a modern 8-10" chuck lathe can accurately thread. I set the program with a 1500rpm limit and really didn't think it would actually achieve that but it made a good thread. So...

Does T32 Mazatrol account for effective drill tip diameter?

In my lathe turret I keep some basic tools, 1 of which is a 5/8" 90deg HSS countersink, and I got to wondering if Mazatrol would adjust spindle speed to a constant surface speed? I tried to observe this but the damn thing is so fast I can't tell.

    ISO CNC knurling tool

I need a CNC style knurling tool with 1" shank and 16 pitch wheels. Anyone got an extra laying around?

One piece of a lot oversized while the rest were 'perfect', how?

I was running a 200pc lot recently in the mill to add a 3/4" hex to some previously turned feature. 4 at a time, 2 per vise, all the turn-work was +/-0.001". The milled parts were coming in at 0.749-0.747, perfect for the application, when (1) piece around unit #150-ish comes in at 0.785"...

    Verner Welding positioner info

I cannot find any info on Verner positioners except for old auction listings. I snagged one at an auction and would like to find a manual for it. Were these marketed as something different in the past? Looks like a solid unit, and theres not much to go wrong with a 3p gearmotor.

    Chuck actuator alignment

I pulled my actuator to inspect it after a crash and now I need to reinstall it. The manual wants <0.0004" TIR and based upon the mounting arrangement, this looks to be a fiddly little bastard. Aside from cleanliness what tips do you guys have for installing and aligning these things? The...

I had my first major machine crash today

Too much bar out the back and too little support bit me in the ass today, I turned some 1" 1018 into an L. Mechanical damage to the machine appears to be limited to the catch pot that feeds coolant from the spindle's backside back into the sump and the spindle's outboard end is no longer round...

FS- B210 lathe chuck soft jaws, used

Got a bunch of soft jaws in an auction and certainly don't need them all. $10/set for regular style, most are 1.7-2.0" tall, some a thinner and one set is 3". $100/set for the pie jaws. 1 set is 4" deep, 2 sets are 3.5" deep. Prefer venmo and buyer pays actual shipping. If you want some...

    Lathe soft jaw basic questions

I have some questions about using soft jaws in the CNC lathe. We'll assume these to all be about gripping the OD of round stock. Machine is a QT15n with either a 10" chuck or 16c collet nose. 1) when boring the jaws- do you bore them on size, or a touch over? 2) what the best way to preload...
