Recommendations for GOOD heat resistant gloves

For our shrink fit machine to pull the holders off the machine and handle for more than a couple of seconds. The machine doesn't have a cooler so we hold the SF holder in the gloved hand and use an air nozzle to help cool it off faster. The gloves we currently have are getting too thin in the...

    Renishaw protected move feedrate

How fast do you guys normally have the feed set when doing a protected move on your Renishaw probe? Default on our Brother seems to be 20ipm for picking up a bore. That's too slow to incorporate that into a program. Also I couldn't find the place in the program where it's defining #119 for that...

    Thread milling Gr5 Titanium

For you guys that cut Grade 5 titanium a lot, what tool do you recommend for thread milling 3/8 helicoil holes? Thru holes, part is about 3/8 to 1/2 in thickness. Also, any particular coatings I should steer clear of? Thanks.

    Brother Speedio 16k spindle question

Our speedio has the 16k spindle, and we have a bunch of 8620 material that gets a bunch of 30mm holes thru about 1" of material. Realistically, how big of a solid carbide drill or a replaceable tip Sandvik 870 drill can I get away with without stalling the spindle? Can I expect a 3/4" drill to...

Can I use zinc plated SHCS's with 7075 aluminum?

Will these be compatible? Or will there be corrosion? I need to bolt down some 7075 to machine some parts, and all we have on hand are zinc plated socket head cap screws. If need be, we can buy the normal oxided bolts. Thanks.

Retention knob wrench/socket. Which is your favorite?

Tried the sockets, they don't last and get worn pretty quickly. Has anyone found a really good wrench or socket that will last without wanting to strip out or come off the pull stud?

    Brother U500xd1 5axis

Anyone know a ballpark price on this machine? I don't need/want to go through the quoting process since I just wanted to satisfy my curiousity. Thanks.

    Shear Hog shell mill

Has anyone used one of these things on a machine that has any balls? I have a big 7075 job coming and want to see if there is anything out there that will beat the Sandvik R390 for roughing. All of the videos I've seen are people running the shear hog on a shitty Tormach, how do these work on a...

Push Brooms--Which ones do you prefer?

Looking for some decent $20-$50 24" brooms for the shop floor. Of course it's going to be pushing wet oil dry as well as chips from the machines. Anyone have a preference as to what ones they like? Currently looking at something like the Libman 801

cnc lathe with sub spindle recommendations

We're getting a semi production job that is around 7" od, 14" long with a thru bore and needs holes drilled on the o.d. So we're looking for a cnc lathe with a sub, live tooling and at least 10" chucks. This is a brand new area for us as we only have regular 2 axis cnc lathes and looking to you...

    Portable coolant chiller

Do these exist? Looking for a portable unit to use on our lathes. Anyone ever made their own?

    Waterjet pricing vs Laser pricing

Does a waterjet typically cost more than a laser to run? We priced out some parts out of mild steel, 1/2" thick and just an average profile that kind of looks like an angled bracket. The Waterjet came back 3-4x more expensive than the Laser quote.

    50Rc 420 stainless machinability

Anyone know how this stuff will cut? I have to drill and counterbore 1200 pcs of 6mm holes on my vmc. I'm used to 4142pht, A2, all of the typical alloy steels and such, but haven't cut 420 hardened in many years. Thanks.

Drop trunnion tables vs traditional. Pro's/Cons?

We currently have a Tsudakoma TWA-160 3+2 table and are looking to get another one. For those that have used both the regular style and the drop trunnion styles which one do you prefer and why? I would imagine more Z height for the drop style. Also any input on the ball drive style would be...

How do you know if your concrete is good enough for your machine?

We're getting a new mill that is 28k lbs, footprint is roughly 200 inches by 111 inches not counting conveyor and such. Table travel is 80 in x 30 inch. When do you guys dig up the old concrete and put in a new deep, thick concrete base? I wouldn't think that 28k qualifies, but that's why I'm...

    OT-casters and their weight rating

We made some bases for some Vidmar cabinets and ordered casters from McMaster. I just wanted to be certain (and I know it's a dumb question) but the rating on these are 270lbs. 4 casters, that means that the heaviest load these are rated for is 1080lbs, right? Not 270 total. I was asked this...

OT- Which paint marker do you prefer for marking steel drops?

I prefer the Uni Paint marker, but the boss wanted something different. Sharpie, Dixon, Overseas (Japan?), etc.. Anyone have a preference?

    Haas HL-2 mid-90's tailstock positioning

We have an old Haas HL-2 mid 90's and the tailstock has lost position. Is there a parameter to tell it where it's at so we can home the XY and run the machine? I was told there isn't a limit/prox switch just an encoder?

Longer needle on a test indicator

I might be overthinking this. If I change out the standard needle on an Interapid to a long one, and only use it to find center of a bore on the vertical mill, would I lose accuracy? Or does the loss of accuracy come from comparing 2 different heights? Also how much of a loss would there be? Thanks.

    Haimer 3D taster lubrication

Is there a place to drop in some light oil on these things? The one we have is a little sticky and doesn't like to return to Zero on it's own like normal. I really don't want to take it apart but if I have to I will. This one has never been crashed and is not used as much as our H&S taster. Thanks.
