    Catastrophic grinding wheel failure

    I once tried a 'whisker ' grind of a plain cylindrical piece without a dog ......got away with the first couple of pieces .........then the wheel grabbed it ,spun it up and melted the centres ......the piece hit the 20ft high shop roof,and bits of grinding wheel went all over the place...

    OT...Roller bearings rust frozen in aluminium housings.

    I have an antique motorcycle engine...put together similar to a Harley ....water in the crankcase has frozen the whole assembly together .......what I need is to soften the rust in the roller bearings ,rust removal not necessary .......once the rollers are freed ,the crankcases can be separated...

    A short time ago ,someone was discussing cracked cast iron head repair.........well ,I have just seen one done with "laser welding".........no heat effects,no heat distortion,no machining needed ,except to reface the valve seats with grinding.

    steam cylinder slide valve facing.

    A few years ago,I built myself a small steam engine using a fabricated D type slide valve cylinder.......bore is 4 3/4", stroke 7" ,an old CAT D333 cylinder liner,pressure 100 psi app,revs 100/min approx.......The flat valve facing is steel to steel.,and has worn badly ,scoring and leaking lots...
