How to hold a small part. 3/4 sq x 1.38 long

I have a small part that could be made from 3/4 square bar or from 1-1/16" dia . I want to hold the bar in the 4th axis and hang the part out about 1-3/4" in order to machine 5 of the six sides. So how to hold it? Round collet with stop? Might be less secure. Round soft collet with blind...

    Power die driver?

I have a part, made from 3/8" 4140 CD bar. It needs a 1.90" long thread, 3/8-24 on one end. That means I have a 3/8 bar hanging 2" out from support and chatter and push off is a bitch. These parts get heat treated, and then I have run a thread chaser die over the part after heat treat to...

    Face or turn?

I have a part made from HT 4140. 4-1/4" dia. After working the front, the part is flipped and all extra material needs to come off. That is about 0.350 in Z and from 4-1/4" down to 1.18 hole thru the middle. So, should I take multiple facing cuts down to center line, or take short OD turning...

Long reach stability and how to get it.

I'm working on a fixture and it requires some cuts with a 1/4" dia x 1.0 LOC 3 flute carbide endmill. The problem is getting down to the feature to cut it and not crash the spindle into the top of another part on the fixture. All done on a BT30 speedio. My options are as follows. 1) Use a 4"...

In a Speedio, how do I do a location verification in program.

I have a few parts that I want to locate visually, have the speedio grab the probe, locate and verify location and change G54 X-location in machine, then run the part. I reckon this is simple like the tool breakage check, however for me, I'm a virgin and haven't done this before. Thanks Jon

Indexable or solid carbide for an unstable part?

I have a part made from 4" x 4" x 1/2" A36 angle. I'm holding on one leg and machining the other which is about 3" extended from the clamp. I need to rough some surfaces and profiles on the face of that leg. Am I better off using a 5/8" 2 flute indexable or a 3/8" solid carbide. I can't run...

How to deep slot on a speedio?

I have an aluminum 6061-t6 part. It is 1-1/2" x 3" and 8-1/2" long. Standing on edge, I mill the part to 2.875 tall, then mill a 1" step down across most of it. At the bottom of that step is a 3/4" wide slot going down from the edge of the tall square end to the opposite end. This requires a...

How do you store your fixtures and vise jaws?

As I keep creating fixturing to replace vises, I'm running into storage problems. My fixture plates are stored on their side, however I don't know where to store my special cut vise jaws for repeat jobs. Right now they are in a vidmar but it is crowded not working well right now. Speedio is too damn fast, how do I slow down spindle acc/dec

I was attempting to add a LANG chip fan to the speedio, but the acceleration on the speedio is so fast I swear it is going to destroy this fan. Is there a method to slow the spindle acceleration down for just one tool? As is, I was going to do something like this. M3S2000 G4P1 (1 second pause)...
