    very magnetic Stainless?

Hey all, I'm trying to make a pen part that will attach to a magnet (to hold onto a scrub shirt - no pockets). I was looking for some 430 stainless, 3/4" diameter 2ish inches long, but can't. I either suck at finding stuff online (yeah) or it's not out there. What's my best bet if not 430? Thanks

    table mounted collet closer

I found a video of a different company using one of these table mounted collets. :)

    table mounted collet closer

So I just heard back from the person who took this photo (in Italy by the way) back in 2015, and he said this was a custom made tool for the job - swaging rings onto cap bands. They told him it was very old. I know I saw a video once of it being used on a triangular pen (the Omas 360) but I...

    table mounted collet closer

that's all really cool. As for the size of the caps - these aren't your typical ball points or G2 that are 1/4 to 3/8" or so. Some of these caps would have been around 5/8" and larger.

    table mounted collet closer

Has anybody seen a collet closer like this before? It was used as part of fountain pen manufacture, swaging thin bands onto caps https://newtonpens.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/omas-ring-collet.jpg Just wondering if it's totally custom, or maybe just old and not something we see anymore...

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

update - it was the wood pegs/squares - https://www.kramerindustriesonline.com/product/hardwood-tumbling-media/ with the high polish paste - https://www.kramerindustriesonline.com/product/cream-finishing-compounds/ With an 8 hour run the acrylic is perfect, the ebonite is nearly there, and...

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

Okay - so. I got my 3 test pieces back from Kramer. They didn't say what they used in the note, but the results are pretty good. The regular acrylic was very shiny. I'd be happy to send it to a customer. The ebonite was about 90% of the way there. Maybe more time in the bowl would get it...

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

The corncob turned to dust without any water at all. I'm guessing it was just cheap stuff in no way meant for this. It was all compressed into little cylinders, and after half a day it was all dust. :/

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

I've never thought about waxing the parts. Not sure if that would be a good idea with fountain pens that get handled a lot.

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

Yeah I have the 5lb bowl from HF. Seems to work as well as my Burr King, but a lot louder. I might just be using the wrong additives, but the walnut shell I ran the other day only gave it a moderate shine. Not near enough to a mirror or almost mirror polish that I get with the buffing wheels.

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

I ran crushed walnut shells on its own and didn't see much shine. Would walnut plus corncob be any better? Thanks

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

So been running corncob bedding overnight, 14 or so hours so far - and VERY little difference from a matte finish. Will add a bit more polish to the bowls over the course of the day to see which one does better. The bedding might not be great though - it's mostly crumbled and turned to dust in...

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

I'm going out today and will buy some corncob bedding on the way home. The sawdust left a nice matte finish.

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

Yeah if they show me I can spend $300 and get what I want, I'm happy to do it. It's the spending big money without knowing what will happen that I don't want to do. Update - the sand is just leaving a nice matte finish on the parts. There's a big difference between the two polishes I chose...

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

Will try that if other things don't work out, thanks. I just sent each of my 3 materials to Kramer and they're going to test tumble in different medias with different polishing compounds to see what happens. I'll hear back from them in a few weeks. And right NOW I have each tumbler going with...

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

That sounds pretty cool. Can you upload a pic here? The way the market is, if you don't show your face at shows, especially the bigger ones (DC, San Fran, LA) the people who would spread your name the most won't get to meet you and know you, and then talk about how cool you are and how...

Vibratory bowl finishing - ebonite and acrylics/resins

When I was teaching art, I started giving fountain pens to my 4th and 5th graders, not sure if the 6th grade kids were interested that year. The next year I moved schools and taught 7-12 graders, and quite a few of them were really into it. The teachers at both schools hated them though, b/c a...
