My mini-mill with red grease is out of grease. Evidently Haas still sells the red grease and I don't have any clogs so I'm just going to get some more of that. https://www.haascnc.com/haas-service-parts/maintenance/grease_oil_sealants/93-1933a.html
The various threads around here about Haas...
Hot water in plastic? No thanks.
I actually don't use a french press. I do an immersion brew process, like a french press, but after the brewing period I pour the grounds through a stainless steel screen into my mug. This requires very little cleanup relative to a french press. I use two mugs...
I have had the impression that 9918 is not quite as good as typical mineral oil emulsions in this regard. I use a 10% concentration which probably improves the situation over using a 5% concentration. I like to take my vises off the table at least every few months and clean the surfaces, or more...
I forgot about Castrol Syntilo 9954. Looks like that one is suited for tough to machine non-ferrous materials. Castrol only makes three full synths last I checked, 9913, 9918, and 9954.
That's another nice thing about the full synth (9918), it's so water soluble that mixing and separation aren't a consideration, and parts washing in plain water works fine, especially warm water. I use 5 gallon buckets of RO water for parts washing, and when it's not so clean anymore I pour it...
Nice. 22A draw though. Might have to plug those motors into separate circuits?
That filter box at the webstuarant store prompted me to look at other things there and it seems to me a stacked multi stage filter for the sump return could be made fairly easily and cheaply by using the perforated...
I don't think cutting a hole in the back is an option on the old model because the square cross beam that the frame sits on is right there in the way.
With the old model I think having the auger may be worse than not having one. The only mod that can be done is cutting the sump windows larger...
I'll add that the old model Mini doesn't even have a rear opening to the sump. Only two tiny square holes on the sides, and on one side it's mostly inaccessible because of the coolant pump.
Ok, I think yours must be the redesigned (last gen) version which has a roof and larger openings to the sump. The Haas youtube channel has a video from Aug 21, 2015 which introduces the redesigned mini-mill so presumably they started selling them right around that time. Mine is the old model...
I do own a 2013 mini-mill and yes the chip management is retarded. What I don't understand is how that big tray actually fits into the machine. Maybe things are different on the last gen model, or you've got a machine without an auger?
Mcmaster-carr sells sheets of inexpensive filter fabric material in various micron ratings. I've used it and it works well. They've got all sorts of screen material too, for making multi stage filters.
I like the sound of this stuff. The 910 says it does not have chlorine in it which is one...
With the Hangs I used well water for the first mix, RO water thereafter. A couple of times here and there I topped up with well water. I'd say the Hangs has changed characteristics over the time I've used it in this sump, some for the better, some for the worse. I mostly machine aluminum.
I try...
I've used 9918 for about 14 years. Every few years I give something else a try just for fun but it ends up not being fun and I go back to the 9918, happily.
Because full synth has less lubricity it might not be the best choice for production work in difficult to machine materials but for a...
I've found Hangsterfers 5080 to be terrible in a lot of different ways and I don't recommend it. Waxy residue in my machine and on parts, dull and spotty finishes, foaming, chemical smell, aggravates my sinuses, etc.
I've switched back to Castrol Syntilo 9918 which is a full synthetic. It's...
HSS jobber drills require spotting if you want your hole on size and on location. Short carbide drills don't require spotting. You can get PCB / circuit board carbide drills for cheap, like $5-6 each from MSC or Mcmaster, if your holes aren't too deep. These drills share a common shank size so...
In my experience the process Daryl describes will likely achieve a burr free or nearly burr free thread depending on the material, but of course the thread will be sharp at the terminations.
A rotary brush tool in the machine should remove any fine burrs that remain and reduce the thread...
Yea I have had them make some custom carbide tools for me: taper endmills with non-standard angles, extended length single point thread mills, double angle cutters with and without tip radius, and a couple of form tools. I send them a 2D cad drawing of the tool profile I need along with a...
