I think there may be a container of acid in your shop that you may not be aware of.
I used to use hydrochloric acid for a pickle when hard soldering. I stored the acid in the plastic jug in came in and the used acid in a tight fitting plastic box.
One day I reached for a bandsaw blade that I...
Finish nail and hammer works best for me. Magnet for steel studs. Concrete block and brick , many types of anchors from Rawl plugs to Molly bolts , redheads ,tapcons etc.
I built a laminated wood bench for that same lathe. 2x4 construction lumber well dried for the bench. I made two cabinets and installed a 2x8 stretcher between the cabinets. This stand is much stronger than the sheet metal stand they sell.
You can download the manual from their site.
I had to...
Is the table square to the spindle? Install the largest machine drill or a straight round in the chuck. Then check the table with a square or draftsmen's triangle. Many drill presses have adjustable tables. There would be a locking lever or a bolt under the table. If the table is not square then...
Buy a pressure treated 2x8 . It will be 1-1/2" thick . Fasten to the concrete. Then a 3x4" 1x6 fastened
up against the 2x 8 . Thats it, You will have 3/4" step at the bottom and varied step at the top next to the concrete floor. I did something similar with white oak planks. Fork lifts and stake...
First digital readout I bought was from Igauging .Mistake, piece of crap and they never answered emails. Bought a 6" readout from Shars that has stainless steel scale as opposed to aluminum on the Igauging crap. Worked perfectly. Then bought 4 more, 6" on DP, another 6" on tailstock and a 24"...
I replaced pressure switch on a Campbell Hausfeld when the original switch went bad. The unloader hose did not fit to the new switch even though the switch looked the same as original. Finally did some checking the old switch nipple compared to the new one. Nipples are plastic. Original one was...
I'm in Mays Landing NJ . Bubinga is spelled correctly. Beautiful very hard and dense . I believe. it comes from Africa. I am sure you could make your own lathe if you want to.
Probably the easiest shop tool to make.
I am a retired carpenter that has cut at least 20 metal doors over the years. A saw , I used a Skilsaw
with a 100 TPI plywood blade, HSS. 1 blade would cut about 3/4 doors before being trashed.
These blades are inexpensive. Wear a face mask, hearing protection .
Set the saw base for 1/4"...
My wood lathe is made from construction lumber and Bubinga for the rails. This lathe is heavy duty, 5'-0" long now but was 14-0 when I first built it. I had a job that required eight fluted columns 11'-6" high. These were structural columns and were not available at a cost I could fathom.
I...
Be careful using files , they break easily. If you can anneal the files and temper them they will work fine. You could skip the gouges etc and use sharp HSS cutters. Tool rest not needed this way.
I had same problem with two vices that I built. I milled the movable jaw 1°out of square. The top of the jaw hits the work . Vices were screwless type. This solved the problem. I also have another vice that I bought for the mill, no problems with this one. Not a screwless type.
I have heard...
I removed SHCS with a left hand drill. The screws were stripped and some were coated with Loctite.
The socket head makes a good place to start the drill. Screws came out easily.
Most of the screws came loose with a couple of revolutions of hand drill, run in reverse of course.
I have only hard soldered bandsaw blades. Have not sawed with a sawmill, just 113" long blades for a 16" wood working bandsaw. I place a 3/8" piece of solder tape between blades. After the joint is done i temper the joint with propane torch for about 5/10 seconds. I have broken blades but not at...
I sharpen { touch up ) drills from #47 / #16 . Usually use number drills . The small drills are honed in a small steel rectangle that can hone drills from #10 / # 60 . I do not always get the smallest drills correct.
One try and then toss them if they do not cut. Guy Lataurd in one of the...
Chain drill as been posted. You will be left with points if done correctly. Install a milling adaptor and an endmill. Do not climb cut. Do not use a chuck and an endmill together.
If you have at least 1 HP you could just mill the slot using cutting fluid and light cuts.
I have a mill-drill but...
I used winding sticks when hand planeing wood slabs. A stick is placed at each end of the board, in your case the bed. Sight the boards, if they appear parallel to each other there is no twist. In your case if one parallel looks out of kilter compared to the other, The low end of the stick means...
