Hello all! Been awhile, does anyone have an idea on the tolerances for the southbend 16 bed ways from factory?
I have a few companies giving quotes for grinding my bed ways back to factory spec but they want to know what kind of tolerance I need.
frankly I can’t really answer that.

Found this Hendey lathe on HGR, noticed the us army ordnance stamp in the bed next to serial number.

First my machines are in general a pet project, I like to modify things even when it’s not financially Beneficial, we all spend money on hobby’s of some kind, mine is to over complicate things and I enjoy it! (I must have some German in me)
I’m looking at a few different DC motors for my SB16...
Hey all, I might be getting a used surface plate for nearly free, 36x36 4” or 6” thick pink granite (not sure of manufacture).
The top corner has roughly 1” by 1” chip that is in the work area (top).
I’m personally not affected by the damage but would like to get it lapped one day.
assuming no...
Found this at hgr online, I’ve never seen anything other then turret lathes from W&S.
Seems to be a rather crude belt drive machine, older then 1910?
Used Warner & Swasey Lathe | HGR Industrial Surplus
Just found these rummaging through my junk.
Smooth handles, theres no letter after 1912.
No circle around the logo.
No stamps on inside of handles.
In really great condition but have surface rust.
Are these really from 1912!?
Ps if anyone gets real interested I can load some full size...
I was talking to the ole lady about how fast life has been passing by and we started talking about Nintendo (regular not SNES) and realized how fast the years actually go by. Anyone got anything to add? I just feel Extinct.
Speaking of Extinction the game was a early favorite! Anyone connect? I...
Hi all I have a 1957 SB16 and I’m foremost looking for a steady rest but also would like a follow rest and a collet set up. If you have something else SB16 related Let me know, I’m still pretty green to lathes. Thanks all!
Also if anyone knows the steady rest part number for a 57 SB16 and could...
Used Southbend Southbend 177oy Precision Lathe | HGR Industrial Surplus
What is this! It looks like a low “mileage” lathe and is in a protective box for shipping?
It has a cover for the lead screw.
Looks like a “super” precision lathe.
Hgr has the swing as a 9” lathe.
Could be great for parts
Hi all, I have a 1952ish index 55 (not super) knee mill with original flaking on all the ways so I feel it holds a tight tolerance.
I am not a pro and only have a “garage shop”.
I want to expand my Capabilities to include cutting my own gears.
I’m interested in hearing any advice on...
I’m planing to build a new threaded back plate for my SB16/threaded nose and I have no idea where to start.
So far I have Sourced (not Purchased) a 2” x 10” round steel blank from my local metal Supermarket and it’s mild steel. (No hole in center!)
My questions for the SB gods on here is
1 is...
I’m looking to either trade or sell my 6 jaw buck adjust true chuck, the jaws have no real wear and NO bell mouth. I’m interested in a 10 inch independent 4 jaw to replace it. Any interest let me know thanks!
I ran across this lathe online and I’m always open to a upgrade from my plain bearing southbend 16. Anyone have experience with this lathe or got any input on if it would be a good garage unit, I see it’s 10hp 3 phase 220 I have 5hp 3 phase available at the moment. I’ve never even been next to a...
1219-193-0051 Hgr stock number serial 114345.
I returned this heavy 10 to HGR due to the amount of wear that the bed and all bearings had. This machine has been ran hard for a long time. Built feb 1941 I believe. The apron handwheel had around 1/2 inch drop if you pull up and release. I measured...
I have a phone book from 1920 and thought it would be cool to show some of the stuff inside it before it turns to dust! Let me know if this interests anyone and I’ll start posting more unrelated ads from inside
