Back at the lathe project this weekend. Some judicious use of a carbide bit on each of the dog teeth...and I got full engagement! The fit is great now.
Now that everything is moving and engaging like it should the next step is to get it stripped, cleaned up, repainted, and installed. It's...
I'm fortunate I didn't wreck anything else when drawing up the apron. My father always stressed that things should go together 'easy' on assembly. I forgot/ignored that solid advice.
Happy to report there is no matching ding on the mating gear. I'll start with the file, reinstall and test the motion.
Here are 2 pics showing the whole tooth. A little blurry but they show the 'mashing' was even.
Wow, that makes sense. And I know just the guy that did that. It did ‘suck up’ with a lot of effort. I NEVER considered the intermesh. If you hadn’t pointed that out I might have repeated it.
I’ll check the mating gear. Conventional wisdom says that’s a cast iron or cast steel gear?
I’m...
Finally got the gear box off. NOT a fan of tapered pins with blind side.
First I drilled. Then I tapped. My drill came out perfectly on the far side. That normally doesn't happen for me when free handing. However, after I tapped it I noticed that on the 'fat' side my drill was partially...
The apron was reinstalled yesterday. Went well enough. (No shafts reinstalled yet)
After hanging the apron I noted that the cross feed handle would now only rotate < 360 degrees???
So off the apron came and back on the bench. That's when this 'abnormality' was noted for the first time...
I was wrong about the oil drip lines being attached to the top plate. Yes, there are lines attached but 2 of them are stub lines and the 3rd is self contained. So, the top plate comes right off. The difficult to access bolt is now very accessible. Waiting for a delivery on a short slide...
Long story short the gear box levers weren't moving as freely as I wanted them to.
I removed everything necessary to remove the gear box. And would continue down that path except for 1 bolt that looks insanely hard to get out. I'd need to try to get one of the famous Monarch tapered pins out...
I don't know how similar the Monarch racks are.
That is how I got mine off. 1/2" bolts in several holes like this one and the rack came right off.
Dramatic reenactment
Any knowledge on how to disassemble a Monarch cross feed crank handle assembly? Those two holes on the front look like they may accommodate a pin wrench? I don't have one that size. Before ordering a smaller pin wrench I thought it best to check with you guys.
Unfortunately that gearing was not/is not present. (And the 10" dividing head has been lost to the ages)
I've read that there is/was a Chinese copy of the B&S 10" dividing head (and gears)?
I used an ultrasonic cleaner and some purple power to get the Bijur fittings to flow again. Some of them took multiple 30 minute baths. Given what those fittings cost the ultrasonic cleaner has about paid for itself already.
Cleaning up the areas that will be won't be easily accessible...
Continuing the refresh on the Model 16K.
The oil lines all flushed out OK. As much as I will ever use this lathe I'll be manually oiling when needed; won't be relying on the Bijur system.
Most of the internet references re molten sulphur were Old Testament...so I went back with...
