I bought a steel bar that is used for lifting weights (barbell) .It is over 7 feet long and 1 inch diameter the ends have a 2 inch sleeve where the weights slide on to and clamp .
I have seen video's of weight lifting and the bars will take hundreds of pounds on each end and flex when picked...

I have had good luck moving the tail stock towards me and using a dial indicator so I can move it back where it was .
#3 Taper per foot .60235 divide by two = .301175
6 inch work piece divide by 12 = .5 x .301175 = .1505875
