If it's a pipe thread you're SOL. If it's a straight thread you can clock it by carefully filing a little off the lead thread so it will start at a little different location.
The books all say feed with the compound. That's the prevailing assumption. I found that using the cross-slide works better. You aren't taking huge cuts threading and the finish comes out better for me. Joe Pieczynski has an interesting video about it on YouTube.

I built one several years ago. I copied a friend of mine's which was a copy of a commercial one. He is a retired engineer. It has a telescopic feature on the main beam. The legs are 2x5x5/8" channel welded to a length of 6" heavy 1/2" wall square tube 16" long. His was 18". It's what I could...
Skates are ok and work fine if you use them right. Four skates will be problematic on any concrete floor because you'll loose one of them when going over a low spot on the floor. Three works better but you still have the problem with turning. Tom Lipton (OxTool fame on YouTube) has a good video...

Some tailstocks have a locking screw on the very back aft end of the top casting. you will need to loosen that before adjusting the tailstock. Depending on the bed wear you may not have consistent alignment along the length of the bed.
There will be part of that casting that is not worn and is still factory. You can set it up to that part and either line bore it or bore it out until you clean it up. Then make a brass or bronze bushing to fit.
