The Renishaw MH20i probe in my Mitutoyo Crysta CMM is not lighting the red LED when turned on. The probe isn't working. The power did go out a few days ago and the computer shut down. Any thoughts? Probe? cable? PC card?
So I'm about to machine a taper on the lathe jaws to hold a casting. Obviously the taper can't match the casting exactly. I'm thinking you shoot to get contact at the widest point (the entrance to the taper)? Seems like that would have the most moment resistance.
I see Cat40s are at an...
We attach a worm to a .343 Dia. motor shaft. The OD on the hub of the worm is .50". They are held together with a .093 Dia. shear pin. Holes on hub are a bit small on the hardened worm (56 Rc) so the pin is tough to get in. We had to switch to a new vendor on the worms and I'm guessing the...
I had to replace my Axis Drive Unit for my Hardinge Cobra 42. I found a thread that gave a detailed explanation of the homing procedure. Now I'm trying to set the limits for X and Z axis. The original numbers are:
Parameter
1320 x 333553
z 400609
1321...
I replaced the servo unit now I have to home the x and z axes. I found a previous thread that described how to do it. Problem is when stroking z out to the specified Hardinge value of 11.000" the motion stops about 5" short (at around 6"). It's acting like a stroke limit - can't go any...
The castings we get weigh about 7 lbs. The wall thickness is less than 3/16" Occasionally they get gouged in the casting process or in the machining process. I was looking for the easiest way to lay some material in the gouge and then grind down. I'm guessing oxy-acetylene is the cheapest...
It's a manual machine and works well. There is a whole bunch more it can do for me but I don't know what a lot of the numbers it puts on the screen are for (also many of the functions, icons, procedures, etc.) I was told when I bought the machine that there was no operating manual for it but...
Was looking at changing the order we stamp out and paint some .093" thick x 2.82" diameter aluminum discs. Right now they are stamped from sheet and then painted (powder coated - one side only). The outside painter would like to paint the sheets before stamping and apply a protective covering...
I can rotate the cross slide assembly with a bit of torque. I'm guessing either the slant bed cross feed dovetail or gibs are worn or loose or the z axis slide rails/bearings are worn. Doesn't look like there are gib adjustment screws for the dovetail - at least now from what I am used to with...
We sent our match plates to a different vendor for our sand cast aluminum molds. The match plates won't mount directly to the new vendor's mold making machine (Hunter HLM-10). The vendor is getting quotes on adapting the match plate by welding on pieces. I don't understand why you would weld...
I have a ruptured air hose on my Hardinge VMC. The spindle taper release cylinder has a push to fit tube connected to the cylinder. Thread is a bit smaller than 1/8 pipe. What would the metric equivalent be? It's tapered and I tapped a 1/8 FPT into a block of aluminum and the fitting seemed...
We have these gear blanks we're trying to optimize strength and weight-wise. The OD of the gear is about 4 inches and the hub (that we clamp on in the lathe) is about 1.5" dia. If I assume a coefficient of friction >= .1 this gives me a maximum taper of 5.7 degrees. Does this number seem...
Most of our products are finished by outside vendors. I want to be able to finish small quantities of the parts myself for times when the outside shops are busy or for prototypes. So, for powder coating, is the powder waste considered hazardous? I'm sure some of the cleaning waste for the...
I'd like to use my Hardinge VMC 1000II with Fanuc 0i-MB control to learn ladder editing. It doesn't look like there is an on-board editor. I assume I would transfer the ladder out to a PC via the RS232 connector or the memory card and then edit it with Fanuc ladder editing software. I then...
An assembly of ours consists of a worm mounted to a shaft. The two are held together by a roll (shear) pin. The hole diameter is .093" and the worm hub diameter is .50". Our best hammering guy retired a short time ago and the rest of the crew has trouble getting the pin inserted and pounded...
I'd like to record (audio and video) the procedures I've been using for different parts I set up and run. I thought maybe a GoPro would work. I was thinking I'd strap it to my head so my hands are free. I'd comment along the way. Does a GoPro do some sort of autofocus? Is there a way to...
I'm trying to evaluate the backlash on my VMC tables. I know the manufacturer compensates the commands for backlash and stores them somewhere. When using the MPG, are the commands compensated or is the compensation only used when running programs?
We use leaded solder for the components on the circuit board that controls our product. I'm not sure how the lead limits (1000 ppm for ROHS) are calculated. I assume it's on a component basis so you would look at how much lead was in the solder. But by chance is it calculated by taking the...
I have #10-24 threads in aluminum. The guys in assembly are having a tough time getting the screws to start properly. It seems like the screws want to cross-thread. My procedure is to spot drill with a 120 Deg. tool to the major thread diameter. I then tap drill and rigid tap the hole on the...
I'm trying to make a 3/8-18 internal pipe thread using a 4 flute, .37 Dia. carbide pipe thread mill. I've tried 3 of the online G code generators but I end of having the same problem with each. The programs use tool compensation and I keep getting the same error:
Error 41 "Interference in...
