Your bag idea would have been my first move, although no direct experience with that media or in a vib machine, experience tells me ;- 99% of the time the simplest fixes are usually the best.
If you can, machine it with coolant, it cuts down the dust, smell and improves tool life, ............ though be aware, some applications of Tufnol, preclude the use of coolant
I''m pretty sure it's not wood, or if it is, it SHOULD be resin bonded cloth known as ''Tufnol'' in the UK, ........ of which there are several varieties, and when making gears one must use the correct variety with the gears being cut from plate, rather than turned from bar or rod.
Crudely is the word 😱 😱 😱 as for the drill, you'll probably have to buy and extra extra long drill and get a tool & cutter grinder to put the pilot and cutting edge on.
Just mt 2 cents, YMMV
True (and the way I cut acme threads) but you are soon running in to problems of stickout V int threading bar dia.
FYI Samples from Roton https://www.roton.com/family/acme-right-screws-and-nuts-7059857/
Not IMHO 1'' x 3 1/2 TPI Nuts, with a minor dia of <> .715, and a projection of cutter AT LEAST 0.290 from the bar, you are fast running out of room for an internal threading tool shank with any stiffness.
I'd definitely cut a new male thread as well, the rust etc on that screw willchew a nut up in no time.
To save time hassle and $$, I'd look at buying ''off the shelf compnents'' and grafting them to the application, before I machined anything.

That...
From what I could make out, ''Foreign'' basically means ;- made anywhere - though usually Germany up to about 1930 ( pre the rise of National Socialism) and possibly Poland or Czechoslovakia. The ''Steel'' is to state it is made of steel and not the cheaper and inferior cast iron, ...
