Hi,
It may be likely that the current does return via the tail stock due to the oil film that exists in the headstock bearings.
If it were me I would still be concerned and probably set something up to rotate with the work piece when welding, since it would only be needed for one revolution...
Hi,
Videos are very slow to load here for some reason so if you mentioned it sorry.
Just wondering how the welding current gets back to the welder. Where is the ground lead connected? Is the welding current flowing through the spindle bearings? Hope not...
Interesting thread. Thanks for...
Probably a great deal. I paid $700 for mine about the same time as you. Would not part with it for $750 now.
Hope someone takes you up on you offer.
Great lathe for that money. 2,500 pounds to move though...
An important thing to remember is that is a good idea to size the motor to the system it is applied to. In other words, would you rather stall the motor, or break something?
The 9 inch and 10K Lathes likely use the same size motor. The 10 L lathe may use a slightly larger motor as it is a more...
Hi,
It is important to write things down when you check things. Otherwise it's possible to get things wrong when you report them.
The important measurement to make is the line to line voltage at the motor terminals when the motor is running. I believe you mentioned the motor has three wires...
Hi,
What is the line to line voltage at the time the motor has slowed and the amps increase?
Check and report back...
Edit: would also be helpful to verify the RPM the motor is turning when unloaded, if you have the means to do so.
Not sure if yours is an earlier vintage than mine(sounds like it is) but perhaps the thread related to mine in the link referenced to above may be of some help...
Mine is a 1946 vintage if I remember correctly.
Hi,
I would be concerned about running the spindle above design speed. Meaning, running the motor at greater than 60 hertz.
My impression is that the spindle bearings might not handle greater than design speed. The motor might also be at risk, as it was not designed to run at speeds greater...
I am confused as to why someone would post a picture of another person's lathe while claiming to have scored a great deal????
Anyway, $200 sounds like a score, but posting an irrelevant picture sort of negates that...
Meaningless post in my opinion.
Yes, I proclaim you are banned!
Funny but you use "idiomas" rather than languages... which shows that you do not "speak" with the fluency of a native speaker, or if you do, that you do not really desire to communicate to the normal person who may read your words here.
AND... it is amusing that...
Whatever the size your price is fair and you should be able to pass it on to someone who needs one.
List the specific measurements like Gary suggested. It should be sold shortly afterwards I bet...
Hi,
Tools4cheap has aftermarket steady rests for SB lathes up through 16". You might want to check him out... good reviews of his products/service. I am also a happy customer...
I have a couple extra drive plates for my 16" SB. Should be the same spindle thread as yours...2&3/8" by 6 TPI. They...
Hi,
My GUESS is that if one thinks he can jump out of the way of a flying part he is probably fooling himself.
There are people who do not wear their seat belts on tractors because they think they can jump off and get out of the way of a tractor that is rolling over...one that has ROPS (roll...
After reading the thread...and the last response before this post (I suppose) I came to the conclusion we should have a "dislike" option along with a "like" option when wanting to give feedback on a given post...
Thanks for posting the info under a thread title that will be searchable in the future.
I have a SB 16 and may want to do that mod sometime...as may others.
One thing I miss on my 10K, that is present on my SB16, is the spindle hole size.
The 10K is something like 7/8" while the heavy 10 and larger lathes are 1.375 or so.
For that money I would hold out for a heavy 10.
Of course, as mentioned previously, price depends on availability and demand...
Hi,
Why bother trying to pull them up? There seems to be a lot of owners that operate their SBs with the tubes flush.
I wonder if some SBs were supplied with flush oiler tubes? In any event, from what I have read here it does not seem to be an issue, as far as spinning the bearing shells. The...
