    SB 7" Shaper... Simplest Question...

Hi all, I have downloaded more than I have time to read about shapers. I have the SB shaper manual courtesy of the US Army, and much more. BUT I still can't get a handle on what feeds I might want to use on my "new to me" SB shaper... I played around with light feeds and depth of cuts...got...

Jacobs Rubberflex 2&1/4-8 backplate for trade...

Hi, I bought a Jacobs Rubberflex chuck that was supposed to be 2&3/8-6, but turned out to be 2&1/4-8. The backplate is removable and is in good condition. I would like to trade this backplate for a 2&3/8-6 backplate as that is what I need for my 16" South Bend lathe. I might consider a trade...

Boyar-Shultz 6x12 Puzzle (for me anyway)

Hi, I wanted to post a picture but for some reason when I go to Photobucket I get warnings telling me to beware...to make a long story short...on both my upstairs and shop computers... So anyway, I now have a 6x12 delux Boyar-shultz surface grinder in my shop. I wanted one because it seemed...

    16" SB, what manuals do I need/want?

Hi all, I have a SB 16" and a 10K. The 16" is my concern at the moment. I did download the army manual from somewhere, and I am familiar with Mr. Swells site, which is a great resource. But I am confused and wonder why I don't know the answer to my own question. I see so many here doing dis...

    Where'd the flaking go?

Hi, I don't think the bed of my 16" SB is hardened. So what surprises me is that I don't seem to have signs of flaking at the extreme ends where the carriage cannot reach. I can almost imagine that there might have been flaking/frosting there at one time, long ago. But I really can not see it...

SB 16" (2&3/8-6TPI spindle) accessories wanted

Hi, I have a 16" SB lathe that I would like to get ready for my future retirement playtime. Currently I have a micrometer stop, a steady rest, several face plates and a 12" four jaw chuck. I recently acquired a taper attachment that I still have not fitted to the lathe. Yesterday the phase...

    What's the pecking order?

HI! First let me say that I know this question really does not make any real difference in the long run...as we all have what we have, or we will end up with what we end up with...but still... I ended up with a 16" SB and a 10K...pretty much by chance (reasonable to good non-ebay prices). I am...

    Safety Question...Lathe horror stories???

Hi! Well, this question has nothing to do with Halloween being just around the corner. It really is a serious inquiry. A few years ago when I got my first real tractor, I learned from reading posts on a tractor forum (tractorbynet.com) that there are real safety concerns when using tractors...

    Several 16" SB Questions...

Hi all, In this thread (click here if interested)I asked for advice regarding the spindle bearings on my new love, and Old 16" SB...thanks to all who helped with advice! I had great success with getting the spindle bearing back into spec, and now wonder what the next step should be with...

    Reflaked Recently?

I am trying to figure out what the deal is on this lathe. I am not interested in buying it, but curious about what the seller is calling "reflaked in 2007." My guess is that it is just cosmetic...what do you guys think? Here is a link to the Ebay auction

    16" SB Spindle Bearing Question(s)

Hi, I decided to order capillary oilers before taking the spindle out of my newly acquired 16" SB. But I couldn't wait...so out came the spindle today. First thing I did was check the clearance by lifting a bar that passed through the spindle like the SB procedure says to do. I got the numbers...

    Capillary Wick theory?

Capillary Wick theory? OK…I guess it is my engineering background…from days past. Anyway, I have an interest in learning more of the theory on which capillary oilers are based. What do I know? Not much. The following link is interesting: http://www.bostonfelt.com/wicks.htm I am still...

16" SB, Pulling Spindle. Wick Issues?

Hi all, I am sure this is a simple question, but since I am uncertain about the answer I have to ask it. Before powering up my "new to me" 16" SB lathe, I thought this would be the time to pull the spindle and take a look at the wicks, bearing surfaces and so on. I pretty much understand how...

Which QC Tool Post for 16" SB???

Hi all, Here's where I'm at...almost hesitate to ask such a simple question. Bought a 16" SB lathe that is about the same age as I am...probably a couple years older...approved by the war board or whatever they called it at the time. I have not powered it up yet. I am actually still...

    Help! Need opinions quick...

Hi, For years I have wanted a metal lathe...and now have been looking with some seriousenss, but having no metal working experience I kind of need to buy something that I can learn on. Prefer not to spend an arm and a leg initially since I am not sure where this is going. I do know I don't want...

Need tips on how to get started!

Hi! First post here. For decades I have dreamed (OK, desired ;) ) to have a tractor and a metal lathe. So I have now two real tractors now, but only a wood lathe. I want to buy a metal lathe, and sort of, kind of, maybe feel like I want a South Bend of some kind. But maybe something else...
