According to my parameter book for the SmoothX control, Alarm 301 refers to the tailstock. I do not know for sure if this is the same for your control.

A rotary phase converter is basically functioning like a rotating transformer. Transformers do consume power to convert one voltage to another but the loss is relatively minor.

If you change speeds on an older control, the thread will not line up as you pointed out. Picking up the lead of an existing thread blind is very hard to do. That's essentially what you would be doing by changing the speed. I do not know of a formula to calculate to get a new speed to line up...

I bought an old Tsugami Turret lathe 10 years ago that had a Trav-A Dial mounted on it. It's still on there today. Mounting a digital readout was never a priority. Lol.
There are much more hazards in welding. I have seldom seen any welders with a proper fume ventilation system at their station.
