I have been away for awhile and have recently read some of the comments posted here regarding Depocam and wish to clarify some things for Sean M. and anyone else looking at either Depocam or machining strategist.
I used to work for DEPO GmbH & Co and have been involved with Depocam/machining...
The software is very fast on the default triangulation which is .0005. You do not have to re-import the model. You click on the existing triangulation and just select a new triangulation tolerance and it generates a new model. There are many examples where this is a really advantageous option...
This is an interesting topic, and one programmers I have met and worked with have debated several times. Through conversations with some CAM developers I have met over the years, I have learned that generating toolpath on Facets rather then surface data, (especially pre nurb surfaces), was a...
Does anyone know of a good Cnc editor I can download as freeware? I have used Cimco Edit for years and just downloaded their 30 trial of V5.0 and it is excellent. But the price is way too much. I have tried downloading ones I have found on the web, but they all lack one thing or another.
RS232 is a pain, and slow. You should consider some alternatives, PCMCI, or even the PDA solution. It really depends on how big your shop is, and is it properly networked. If you are doing DNC all day, every day, you might want to hard wire something (ie: ethernet)
The retail price of MS is $16,000US. Posts are included (even 3+2). Usually 1 day of training is included. The maintenance is 15% of the list price/ year. If you don't want to renew your maintenance, you don't have to, and can continue to work for years with the same release. There is a...
Depocam and Machining Strategist were the same product up until 3 years ago. Depo, is a German mold shop (www.depo.de), which provided the ideas and cutting strategies to a company called NcGraphics, which developed the product. In their agreement, NcGraphics was allowed to sell the product...
Scojen,
Is this an RS232, RS422 or ethernet connection to the machine? In my experience, if you have alot of network traffic, it will slow down communications to the machine significantly. I had this happen with an ethernet conncetion to a Makino. We ran the same file using a flash memory...
I had the opportunity to evaluate and Test Edgecam V9.75 and Mastercam X with Prodrill. Edgecam is a decent product, but it is a bit clumsy with its handling of the toolpaths. The hole recognition and graphics are great, so too is Strategy Manager, if you have 2 months to set it up correctly...
Let me answer Dan's questions first:
1) Advantages of MS over WorkNc
Lets be honest, Sescoi revolutionized the market when WorkNc was introduced. It was, and still is a very good product. It has evolved as have the other CAM products, but Machining Strategist is very unique amoung all the...
This is true. But in my defence, up until 2 months ago, I used WorkNC, Powermill, Mastercam 2-5 axis, Edgecam and Machining Strategist. I do applications for Vero, not sales. I may work for this company, but I remain far more objective then most I meet when it comes to software comparison. If...
I know, and have used, 8 different CAM systems over the last 12 years. I have seen some good, some bad and some that are real ugly. Just trying to bring some usefull information to the forum.
Depending on what you are looking for in a 5axis solution, you should check out the new 5axis from Vero International. It is very comprehensive, has excellent gouge checking, uses a kinematic simulation to check your *.nc file, and is quite easy to learn.

For those looking for a true HSM stand alone product, it would be benificial to check out the new Version 8.0 of Machining Strategist. Since being taken over by Vero International 3 years ago, Strategist has progressively gotten stronger and faster then most of their competitors. With the...
