I saved this Newell vise from the scrapper and as luck would have it, it fits perfectly (bolt holes line up in both directions) on my Windsor planer and is of the appropriate age for the machine. From what I can tell, Newell vises were used exclusively on Pratt & Whitney shapers but looks good...
I thought about starting a page on facebook for only photographs of lineshaft driven machine shops but I think I will post them here instead. If anyone else has some lineshaft machine shop photos I would like to see them here as well.
Here is the first, a small planer running a job, no other info.
This is a circa 1870 Putnam that is being auctioned off and it ends tomorrow 3/31/21. It is in Arlington WA and is very complete, it looks like the only thing missing are the feed rods. It's too far for me but maybe someone on the west coast can get it. It is lot 42.

Just passing these along from Facebook, it seems like a good deal, all the lathes for $1000.

I got a Whiton centering machine recently similar to Irby's and Rob's. It looks to be in good shape except where someone cut holes in the base to run a belt from underneath. I also found this article with some poor pictures.

I bought the machine from the estate of Gary Murdoch in...
Anyone have any advertising on Betts lathes that is not on the Vintage Machinery site. I'm looking for anything like the photo of what I think is a cylinder boring lathe since there is no cross slide, only T slots. I would guess that the lathe is from the 1870's or 80's.
Since there was interest in seeing my portable crane I decided to start a new thread about it. It is a Canton Portable crane built by the Hill Acme Co in Cleveland OH. It was made in the mid 1940's after the Hill and Acme companies merged. The size is a No.3 and it is rated for 2 tons.
Here are a few pictures of the first cut on my circa 1900 Garvin No.22 vertical milling machine. I found that there is a little play in the spindle bearings which I am figuring out how to adjust the bearings. The biggest problem is with the Westcott chuck in the spindle. I put an end mill in the...
I looked at a Betts lathe tonight. It is listed for sale on Facebook for $500. I am not interested in it but just want to see it saved. If anyone is interested in it I can forward the contact info. It will swing about 20" and the bed looks to be 8' long. There is no cross slide and some teeth...
I had to make some metric tubing nuts for an antique French engine and none of my lathes has metric threading. Luckily my L Robbins lathe has loose change gears so I can play with ratios to get what I need. I had to cut a 1.5 mm pitch and the diameter was not a standard size. 1.5 mm equals...
I have a small slide valve steam engine from the 1870's and I was wondering if anyone has any images or knowledge of the setups to machine the surface inside of the valve chest. There is not much room on the ends and the bosses for the bolts overhang the machined surface. I know it could be done...
We went and picked up that early lathe from the Jefferson County Historical Society on Thursday and we put it back together today at Rough and Tumble. When we got there we found that they built a wall in front of the door that it had to go out of so we had to take the head and tailstock that...
I have a book called Early Stationary Steam Engines in America written by Purcell in 1969. In it is an account of boring a cylinder for a water works engine. The account was by Thomas P Cope who was visiting the Soho Works of Nicholas Roosevelt in 1800 to witness the boring of the cylinder for...
Here are some pictures of a 24" x 10' heavy duty Advance Rumely lathe that is at the museum work shop where I volunteer. It is the only one I have ever seen and from Google books it was probably built in the late teens. It is a very heavy lathe said to take the heaviest cuts that high speed...
Here is a nice complete lineshaft shop for sale although it looks like some A-hole took all the brass tags off. Pictures below.

Here are some pictures of my new Greaves Klusman lathe. It has a 22" swing and 8'bed with a taper attachment. I am guessing it was built about 1902 to 1905. It sat outside for about a year but only suffered from a small amount of rust on the spindle and ways but the tailstock spindle is stuck...
