Hmmm... a little late to the discussion, BUT.....
would it not be easier to just make a set of change gears? I did and it really wasn't that big of a deal. while I was at it I made the ones for the DP set as well.

A very good friend has a contract to do some repair/restoration on the "historic" Watsons Mill in Manotic Ontario ( near Ottawa)
One of the many issues that need to be addressed are the worn/broken/loose/mis-shapened teeth on the drive wheel from the turbine to the shaft of the mill grinding...
Try to search the forum. There was some discussion about the progression of McDougal - VDF.
Some of these were a VDF headstock/ Gears on a McDougal bed, some were VFD lathes assembled in Kitchener.

A friend in Connecticut just bought a "VERY" nice Maho 700 for around $2000.00 usd.
Came out of a speciality shop and wasn't used a great deal.
What kind of "stuff" is with it? what are the electrics? if it is 220volts 3ph, it's worth way more than 575volt.

I do the reverse often ( US -Can)
if it's a personal thing, a bill of sale and a reasonable explanation is usually enough. No duty as it is a US made item.
For a commercial item you should get in touch with a customer broker. Not much cost and way less fuss. My experience is they are worth it...
