Gears for a 150 year old mill

A very good friend has a contract to do some repair/restoration on the "historic" Watsons Mill in Manotic Ontario ( near Ottawa) One of the many issues that need to be addressed are the worn/broken/loose/mis-shapened teeth on the drive wheel from the turbine to the shaft of the mill grinding...

    VDF Mcdougall H&H 18 RO

Try to search the forum. There was some discussion about the progression of McDougal - VDF. Some of these were a VDF headstock/ Gears on a McDougal bed, some were VFD lathes assembled in Kitchener. Also have a look at lathes.co.uk Where are you located? Peter

To the new and old members who want to rebuild your own machines

The things I got out of reading Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy are 1) nothing is round, 2) nothing is flat 3) everything moves with temperature, and context is everything. If you are building (rebuilding) a high precision jig grinder, finite attention to the above in imperative! If you are...

    Recently aquired Maho 700

A friend in Connecticut just bought a "VERY" nice Maho 700 for around $2000.00 usd. Came out of a speciality shop and wasn't used a great deal. What kind of "stuff" is with it? what are the electrics? if it is 220volts 3ph, it's worth way more than 575volt. Peter

I am working on my 12" Hendey shaper's oil system. it is re-circulating system, that pumps yje oil through a felt filter before it goes to the various parts of the machine. The drawing I have says to change the filters if the oil flow is reduced. The felt in the filter box is pretty gooey so I...

Entering US from Canada with used machine, less than $2500?

I do the reverse often ( US -Can) if it's a personal thing, a bill of sale and a reasonable explanation is usually enough. No duty as it is a US made item. For a commercial item you should get in touch with a customer broker. Not much cost and way less fuss. My experience is they are worth it...
