A few years ago, I picked up a surface grinder, planning to do all the cool restoration. Fast-forward to today, and it just ain't gonna happen, so it's time to let it go.
This is a 5x10. I can't give a date or serial number, since there are no badges. The previous owner rebuilt it, powder...
I often see references to Swiss or Swiss type machines. What makes them different from other machines? I notice that they are usually mentioned in connection with very complex operations. Thanks for educating me!
I know you pros don't need this, but I do. And so I thought that maybe someone else might...
It's valid for a SB model A, with standard gearing. Possibly others, but that's what I have.
I purchased a Starrett 216 (0-1") on the Bay. My eyes just aren't up to reading a standard mic anymore. There is a click, or a hitch, in the action, every rotation of the spindle, every .025. Starrett won't do a repair as such, only a total rebuild for around $100. Since I paid $60 for the tool...
I have a live center, 2MT tailstock center. Withdrawing the hand wheel does not eject it. Looking at the center, it has a flat end (no tang) and is shorter than the centers that DO have a tang. I tried drilling into the end, thinking I could add a bolt to give me the extra length, but it appears...
After sitting idle for months (the 10K, not me), I'm getting back to it. The first thing I notice is that the cross-feed dial is not moving with the handle; that is, it spins. I tried tightening up the knurled screw, but that did nothing.
So, I pulled it apart. In order of removal, I had:
the...
I have an AXA size setup. I want to use HSS bits that I can grind myself. Obviously 5/16" bits will be easier to grind than 3/8" or 1/2". But they are too small for the setscrews to grab them. If I used a section of 1/16" aluminum angle below and behind the bit, it brings the bits out to where...
I am going to make myself a clamp-type knurling tool for my 10K. I think I can handle it, but I have a question about the axles for the knurling wheels. Would shoulder bolts be adequate? And, will a 1/4 inch bolt work with a knurl that has a 1/4 inch hole? Will I have to enlarge one/thin down...
I have a DP-220. I got it from the lumberyard where I worked in the late 80's, after a major fire. Paid the insurance company $10! The main reason that I wanted it was because it has a foot feed. I tore it down and restored it. Now, I'm curious as to when these presses were made. There is no...
On the cross-slide crank of my 10K, the graduated dial won't tighten up when I screw in the locking screw. A quick glance shows that it's too short. The parts list shows a small filler, under the screw. What is that? Will a short piece of brass rod work as a substitute? Does anyone have...
Does anybody have any 12-28 gib screws? I just need one to replace the one with a broken screw head.
If I have to, I'll replace them all with allen screws, but even then, I hate to buy 100 when I need 9.
thanks,
mike
I just received and installed new cross-slide and compound nuts for my 10K. Installation went pretty well (had to emery the compound nut to get it into the hole.) I followed the instructions in Steve's renovation book to put it all back together.
I'm not crazy about the results, so I'm...
When you have a large hole to bore, where do you start? I would guess the biggest drill bit that you have, and open it up with a boring bar from there? Or are there better ways to get close at the start? I mean enlarging from a 1" S&D bit to 3" in 1/2" steel is gonna take quite some time!
I understand how turning between centers with a face plate and a dog works. But how do I hold the dead center in the headstock of the 10K? Do I need to find a 6k collet to hold the center?
So if I just wanted a couple feet of a few things to have around for those "oo, I gotta have it" inspirations, what would you suggest?
Aluminum, of course. 12L14 in various diameters? Cold rolled flats, squares, hex?
