Photos of a very large (12 foot bed, appx. 28 inch swing) lathe I saw recently. Photos have a lot of items obscuring the machine and it was in a tough spot to snap pictures. I believe the cast nameplate said "New Haven" but this might have been a dealer's plate. There were nearly 3 foot...
So I spun a drill, bad, in my 14" SB drill press at work - to the point where a dowel pin chucked up showed around 8 thou TIR runout. Easy, right? Just take off the old chuck and put on a new one. Troubles begin:
1) the standard double extractor wedges are NLA at mcmaster carr. Instead they...
Working on my long-term seneca falls lathe project, and want to build a thread dial for it. it's got a 12 tpi leadscrew, and I'm limited in the diameter of the gear bacause of the carriage layout (halfnuts lever protrudes from the right side of the carriage). Years ago some kind soul stepped me...
About two weeks ago I promised a print for an unusual Enco QC toolholder - and damn if I can't find the thread where it was discussed. Anyhow i had to re-create the print from an old one, could not find the file. So here it is.
Working on an older Potter bench lathe and the sindle has a bad oil control issue. The oil cups will keep oil in them for days as long as the spindle's not turning. I recently (finally) rigged up a motor and coutershaft, and the oil is pumped out of the bearings in minutes - rear bearing worse...
Looking to get a form tool made - starting material would be a 3/8 square HSS toolbit, with the form EDMed on one or both ends. DXF file would be supplied.
Pls reply here as PM for this site disabled.
Thanks much -Jim
I'm partway through working on a fairly trashed out pratt and whitney toolmakers compound, and have a few questions about the cross-slide - basically questions that have been on my mind for a while about dovetail slides like this.
What are the actual bearing surfaces on a slide like this...
A close inspection of the Tony lathe site does not show this exact machine, but the headstock sports a suspiciously back-gear type lever on the front. Would those be 5C, or shaublin collets?
Thanks - Jim

Some may recall my comment about a buddy who drove a Black Shadow, with a stop-sign sourced aluminum toolbox on the back. This is not that man but the story is too good not to link.

I've just reconditioned a turret for a 70, and am adapting it to a larger lathe (pratt whitney 7") but upon
inspection the tooling holes existing in the turret now are 14 mm. Is this a common size or has this been
modified in the past by a prior owner?
All my tooling is 5/8 inch shank so I...
Suppose this could go in the general sale/wanted forum but as it's most likely to be seen by somebody who has one, I put it here.
The lathe is a Potter, which has an unusually wide bed, three inches from side to side across the flat, and has an unusual dovetail angle of 55 degrees. The...
I had lost a small screw from a hardinge indexing toolpost (long story, but it's still somewhere on my basement floor) and took the time to make a new one this weekend.
But the originals are blacked and I felt queasy about putting a bare steel one in place of the original. There's a bit in...
In the past this used to be a TECO drive from automation direct. Looks like the drive I was looking for has gone away?
Basically a one hp drive, sensorless vector with 120 volt single phase input. Looks like TECO stuff is outdated/NLA.
Any recommendations for alternate brands appreciated.
If anyone has a 90 bed handy, I'd appreciate a measurement on one of the features.
Specifically, the thickness of the overhang on the T-slot side of the center slot. My guess is
it should be around 0.239 inch thick (something around 6 mm).
I've got an adapter plate in the works to fit a 90...
About to repair a bull gear for a heavy ten, seems to be 5.5 inch diameter, 75 teeth which
makes it 14 DP as far as I can tell.
But does anyone know the pressure angle?
Tnx - Jim
