Chinese lathe good enough for my needs?

Oddly enough, many “metric” countries use BSP ( inch) pipe threads, but NOT tapered. I have had to do plumbing in Argentina where everything is metric except plumbing, and I had to buy organic, plant based dope and real sisal, as the threads are straight, not tapered.

    Holtzapffel Lathes - Ornamental Turning

The problem with a real holtzapfel is you pay twice- once for what the machine can do, and once for the rarity, collectibility and cachet of the antique. A quarter million is not uncommon these days. There are two recently built small production rose enine lathes, which, though not cheap, are...

They have plumbing. And electricity. Heck, they even have starlink. Steel mills, auto factories, pretty decent manufacturing base, including a lot of things no longer made in the USA. I have four choices of domestic rubber boots, pretty much all commercial kitchen equipment is local, sliding...

Machining a Famco #1 Arbor Press pinon gear

have it waterjet cut. (assuming you have enough of the original to use as a pattern) its not exactly a high speed item, as long as you use a hard enough steel, accuracy is much less of a concern than, say, a transmission gear.

US unemployment numbers keep reaching historic lows, is this making it hard to find workers in your shops?

yup, I am on SS. I get a bit below the average, as I was self employed for a lot of years. In the world in general, I am much wealthier than half the entire global population, as half the people on earth live on six bucks a day or less. How that affects the fact that wealthy Russians have fled...

US unemployment numbers keep reaching historic lows, is this making it hard to find workers in your shops?

Most russians these days are walking across the southern border. Canada is harder to enter than mexico. My relatives, and my wifes, 100 years ago, were allowed into Canada much more easily. There is a reason the “ five towns” in western Minnesota, where many finns first landed for more than 50...

US unemployment numbers keep reaching historic lows, is this making it hard to find workers in your shops?

I spend a lot of time in Argentina and the immigration system is overwhelmed with 30,000 new russia immigrants since the war, and they all seem to have kids in $500 strollers. Which, coincidentally is the average monthly wage for half of argentines. Meanwhile in Sri Lanka, a quarter of a...

    When does NET30 start?

It seems like this is a situation where the size of your business, and the size of the customer, determines what you can demand. As Bob describes, if you want to do hundreds of thousands to millions a year, dealing with companies like Ford and GM, you go along with whatever their policy is. You...

Ox, you may be younger than I am - my grandparents were all born before 1910, and my great grandma was borm in the 1880s in Sweden. Those are the generations I think of when I talk about immigrants who still spoke native languages in the home. That side of the family grew up in western MN where...

The Italians were "gangsters" when they first came. Same with the Irish. And, just like the people from central america, only a very few were actually criminals.
