Anybody Here Buy the K&T #5 Vertical from OSU Surplus Today?

I absolutely can't stand personification of machines.
It is just a rediculous and juvenile concept in my mind.
And people who name their machines or cars and trucks.
What are you, 4 years old, living in rainbow land?
Some might say... Oh it's just so fun to do !
Fun ? ? ?
Grow up.

Why do you even care? 😂

Why do you even care? 😂
You people can do as you please.
You can live in story book land.
That's fine. Whatever suits you.
But if there is an intelligent conversation happening
and someone says, Let me calculate that for you....
I have my favorite calculator named Sylvester right here!
It makes me think his cheese is off his cracker.
But keep giving names everyday objects. It is an public indicator
of your insanity. Just like the saggy pants guys. I think that
is great. It just shows everybody, far and wide, what a jacknut
you are, without even saying a word. You have no idea how
perfect that is.

All boat owners are jacknut, juvenile and insane. Yup! LOL! Steven King seems a bit weird, so, yeah, writing a book about a car named "Christine", having it made into a movie and making MILLIONS in the process, is a sure sign of his lack of intelligence.

However, saying all that, I do NOT name my machines. But that doesn't mean I look down on anyone who does. I am still baffled why you care what other people do with their machines.

I named my forklift Billy Baroo...everytime I'm moving something really heavy / sketchy, I say to myself "Oh Billy, Billy, Billy"!

I think it is rediculous to name machines.
I think it is rediculous to name boats.
I think it is rediculous to name cars.
At this point in it's history, this is still a free country.
I can think what I want. You do not have to understand
my reasons in my head. That privelage is reserved for
only me. I have some personal thoughts on religion and
politics too. I bet you would not understand them either.
You sound like you want to be the thought police.
What is your angle fella ?

You started it. Sounds like you have the agenda.

You started it. Sounds like you have the agenda.
I did NOT start it.
More than a few people stated how great those personification of machines drawings were.
After they expressed their positive opinion, then I expressed my negative opinion.
You might not agree with my opinion, then you try to call me out in every which way
about it. No sir I did not bring it up. You aparently can't handle things that are contrary to
your opinions. And now you are trying to correct me on my spelling? Get bent dude.

-D

You did start it.
Would you have walked up to a group of people at this auction who were looking at and enjoying the picture taped to the mill and said:

"I absolutely can't stand personification of machines.

Then when told to lighten up and/or mind your own business have followed it up with:

"You people can do as you please.

I would hope not. Depending on who was in that group you might be looking for your teeth.

I hope your day gets better, sounds like something got you all bound up.

If you mean, I did not agree with the group opinion,
then yes I started that.
Again, you don't like what I have to say, fine and good.
Just move on. If you want to pick your teeth with my opinions,
well, ask yourself what are you looking for out of this.
Anyone can agree and be a yes man. Say something
the group does not like, no one will respect your opinion.
Grow up. I can stand on my own accord.

Having an opinion on something is kind of like having a dick. It is fine to have one, it is fine to believe it is the best, and it is fine to share it with someone who wants it.
But when you go around trying to force it on people and shove it down everyone's throat is where you cross the line into being an asshole.

Good luck with the rest of your day. I'm done here.

Right back at ya! If you don't like that some people personify an inanimate object, move on. In all possible permutations of this thread, you started it.

What about all the guys who posted that they like it?
Should they move on too?
Are only positive opinions allowed?
You have a strange set of rules for being a spectator here.

O.T.
I don't like this but you use a clown character to identify with your name on the forum. Not being critical. It doesnt bother me.
The pasted words in your post below where you personify a machine several times. In the last line you say your okuma doesn't have personality.
Life doesn't have to be so serious. I don't name machines but wouldn't give a second thought in anyone doing so. No anger needed.
If a machine has personality it should be able to have a name. Words to identify a machine can cross human/machine lines.
The words below are yours. I can see that you had real human enthusiasm for that old Grand rapids MACHINE. That's a good thing.

I enjoyed your post on the Grand Rapids when I read it. Then I read this thread and see what you say.
We are pooping on someone's K&T#5 Thread

Once some time ago, I worked in an old machine shop in Buffalo NY.
I am an engineer but I was working as a machinist for a temporary job.
At this place, they had a G&L surface grinder. It could have been a #28
but I am not sure. It looked a little larger than the ones pictured here.
I think the chuck was 8x24" or something. What I do remember is that
it was a formidable machine. Big and hulky. It had this mechanical
ratchet power feed deal-eo that stuck below the saddle a little bit.
It woud go, ccrraannk-spluuunk, ccrraannk-spluunk... as the table
went back and forth. I don't think it was hydraulic. And it had this big
full length door on the back. You could swing it open and see the
belt and the elevation screw. I think it was vee belts, but not sure.
But the acme screw was worn to knife edges. This thing was old.
It had the tenths dial in the center of the thousandths dial. I used it some
times. I believe I could dial in 1/2 a tenth more depth of grind, and it
seemed to respond as such. Pretty neat I thought. I remember we had
some tall parts to grind, and I would out on a wheel worn very much
smaller, to like 5" around. I think it took 10 or 12" wheels normally,
with a 3" hole. As old as it was, it FELT accurate. Probably in my mind,
sas the table was sure swaybacked, as old as thing puppy was.
But it was a cool experience to run the controls on a machine like this.
It had a real personality, as old machines tend to have. At the time
I had a Boyar Shultz 612 at home, and this G&L was a whole new
experience for my. Kind of like driving a big truck with a bunch of
gears for the first time. Kinda the same, but a totally different experience.
Every time I see a G&L grinder, it brings me memories of the one I
used at this job shop. Now I have an Okamoto, but not as much
personality in that machine.

The mechanical response of the controls makes me feel connected
to the machine and the work. Like good power steering or power
brakes, not too much assist, not too little. Lets you feel the road
and the car. For sure, you can see that is what I was talking about
when I said Personality.
But that of corse is not drawing faces on a machine and naming it Sparky.
Personification is not personality.
