Best Machine Shops

What's the point of your 'mature' response?

well your off to a good start.

all I do is proto/R&D.

Am I the best?

Very occasionally,
once in a while,
when I get lucky,
when you get lucky.
when I feel like it,
when the stars align.

That one's really difficult ... could we start at "good enough" and work our way up ?

'Best' reminds in the machining world when someone says 'Perfect!'
No such thing in our field, we can measure the varying degrees of inaccuracy.
Engineer: "Can you cut this to 8 inches for me?"
Me: "Sure, what tolerance?"
Engineer: "No tolerance, just make it dead nuts."
Me: "Is +/- .001" good enough?"
Engineer: "Oh, yeah, it could be off 1/8 of an inch and it would be fine."

To the OP:
The vast majority of the time, you do not need the best, and if you don't need the best, you sure don't want to pay for the best. What you want is just good enough for your needs, plus a little safety margin. Determining what that is, requires knowing and understanding your needs, and the answer will be different for every situation.

Me: "Sure, how long do you want it?"
Engineer: "I'm going to want it for a while, I'm going to make a shelf out of it."

I'm looking for the best machine shops in the northeast, but also the country in general. Specifically CNC machining, CNC turning, grinding, EDM and welding. Materials are typically 304/316 stainless, sometimes copper or brass. Ideally, they would also have in-house designers that can support various odd requests.

what does design mean to you, really? CAD jockeys that can draw parts? Sounds like a job for a home job shop.
