Bigger motor than VFD for hydraulic application ok?

Electric and gasoline engine hp are exactly the same. The difference is that if you overload a gas engine it sputters and dies. An electric motor can put out 4 to 6 times its rated power for short periods of time. So if your machine requires full power intermittently for just a few seconds at a time then a smaller electric motor may do the job.
 
There are very few electric motors that output 4 to 6 times their rated power. More like 2X. NEMA B standard calls for 1.75X and most makers will overshoot that some...but not 4-6X.

Our charts here show a 2hp electric motor running at 1,000 rpm will develop a torque of about 14.2 NM. The spec sheet for the L70V6 shows maximum torque at 13.5 NM. If so, the 2hp motor should work if you can live with the slower speed. As you note cycle time will be longer, but still may be acceptable.
